I hope you didn't pay too much for it.. Sounds like a broken movement to me.

 

Thank you for your reply, the watch wasn't too expensive indeed. When it only works one day, it is still too expensive however . I am a bit of a newbie in the watch space. Can you tell me how I can check the movement is broken? And can a movement still run for an hour every time if it's broken?

 

It's possible the minute hand isn't seated correctly and every time it gets to 8 minutes past it rubs against the underside of the crystal? The friction could be preventing it from running any more until you give it a shake to free it.

 

Thank you for your reply. This may be the case, though a simple shake is not enough to free it. Only when I pull out the crown to set the time and move the hands, it runs again...

 

Minute hand may be making contact with the crystal at approximately 10 after. Could be the hand isn't seated flat or the crystal isn't seated properly. The movement hasn't enough torque to push past, but you turning the crown provide enough to drag it past.

There’s a chance that it’s rubbing as MX postulated. Good luck with it anyhoo.

 

IMHO, you best line of defense is to let a local watch pro inspect it to avoid further issues.

Depending on how much you paid for it and how much you like it, I would either write it off or take it in to a local watchmaker.

If the former, instead of tossing it, you could open it up to learn more about movements or "Pay It Forward" to someone interested in doing so.

I had a watch do something similar a while back. It was a particle of dust that was in the movement in the gear train. I took had to move the hands to get it going. It would run and stop at random.

Dear all,
I have bought a used mechanical/automatic watch several days ago. It's an Infantry 44mm IN-025-MAC skeleton watch. The first day it worked normally. However, now it stops every (few) hours. This happens always when it's around hour:10 (so at 8:10, on 11:10 for example). It's currently stuck at 3:08. When I shake it, it doesn't start itself. When I turn the crown to wind the spring, it doesn't start either. The way I got it started again is to pull the crown out and twist it a little. At that point, I feel a little click and it starts running again.
Next hour/2 hours, however, it's stuck again.

Any ideas what might be the cause? I attached some pictures of my watch.
