Metal Cased Retro Digital Watch

6863 Views 36 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  CPTX
I recently ordered an Armitron Griffy (the gold one with red LEDs since it looks so seventies) and this got me looking around for a metal-cased LCD watch.

This proved to be a bit of a challenge since all of the Casios currently available seem to be resin-cased. I found the Armitron Rubik and it looked pretty cool, but looking around led me to another Armitron. As far as I know, it has the catchy name of 40/8487, but name aside it was pretty much what I was after. A bit over $40 and should be here next week.

Just in case anyone else is looking for a retro-cool digital watch that's not the Rubik and has an apparently real metal case:

Except for the Timex LCA, the other Timex digitals are plastic cased.

The LCA is the one I’d get anyway. :D
I just checked the T80 and the case material is “Low Lead Brass” which I’m guessing is a fancy phrase for the classic”base metal.” :p

Not sure how “retro” you’d consider it, but Casio has an entire line of all metal G Shocks.

Wow, I didn't know that. I have two of the T80's progenitors, "T78587" or similar, and those are chrome-plated resin. But you're right, timex.com says "Low Lead Brass" and the caseback looks different.

Interesting! All this time I thought all the new models were the same watch with new bracelet and faceplate. Now I have to check out these T80s.

I have a 40/8474 and was surprised with the quality. Much better than anything offered by Casio in the same price range.

The LCA (the Q reissue) has terrible owner reviews. Looks like poor QC and overall execution.

Amazon description says case is supposedly stainless steel. Then again sometimes these descriptions are way off the mark.

Be warned that the dial markings do not actually correspond with the watch functions, as noted recently in this thread:

Thanks for the warning. I really appreciate it. I'm going to have to think about whether this is a minor thing or if it will eventually drive me completely insane and send me on a lifelong quest to find a proper stainless steel retro digital watch.

I have the Adidas Digital Two and I can confirm that it is a full stainless steel watch. It is beautiful crafted with a slightly curved mineral glass, a brushed surface on top and polished on the sides. The bracelet is a thin, old school "sliding-clasp" style but I don't like those and changed it for a Casio bracelet with normal folding clasp that I like much better. Overall this watch is in my opinion one of the best retro style digital watches I have ever seen, the size, fit, finish and functions are superb. Uncluttered display, large digits, a 24h countdown timer (to the second), a 24h stopwatch, one alarm, hourly chime and Timex style Indiglo EL-backlight. Highly recommended.

Thanks for the feedback! That adidas is now definitely back on my wish list. Icing on the cake is probably the EL backlight. Blows the Armitron Rubik and its pathetic incandescent light out of the water. Some pics would be greatly appreciated. All we have going for is that rendered image on Amazon.

The Adidas looks interesting, but could have done without the awkward dial text reminding us about the Adidas stripes in three languages.

I agree, I've been trying to find a review, without success. Thanks, cal..45!

After some amount of thought, I ended up ordering the Adidas watch, too. It got here yesterday and it's very nice. It reminds me of the watches that were around in the mid-1970s.

Thanks for posting this! Just ordered mine. Actual photos look much, much better than the product renders. Seems like the module is supplied by Timex, but I haven't seen this in any of their current Ironmen or Expeditions.

Mine arrived yesterday - same day shipping - and man am I digging it! This is the answer (or at least the best for now) to my retro stainless steel digital needs. The Armitron Rubik was a decent attempt, ultimately let down by that unusable backlight. This has a decent size, great case finish, and a usable retro bracelet. Oh and that little "essay" on the bottom of the dial has fonts so small you can't read what's on it anyway so a non-issue for me.

I would put the Adidas on a rubber or leather strap.
