If somebody made this watch I'd buy it. San Martin should start designing their original watches using MJ, this is certainly a lot more interesting than anything they've come up with on their own.

Aye! True that! I'd totally buy that one !
Even the "photoshoot" was done nicely, with all late afternoon soft light 'n shieh, like it was for a Penthouse issue or som'm. (y) :geek:

I have mixed feelings about the near future in which we will (probably) see a great sea change in how the watch industry will go about presenting their next line of products.

It will change the prototype-making, and funding process. No need for laborious renderings, no photoshop.
Consumers will have dozens even hundreds to choose from, and vote on, before the manufacturer makes even one actual watch.

I don't see watch companies firing their designers and dumping CAD programs any time soon. Watches are kinda precise things. That requires precise design tools, which AI most definitely is not.

I am not denying the need for the human element. (But who knows for how long?)
I was thinking more that designers will have hundreds upon hundreds of Ai made designs to refine.

"Rough sketches" so to speak, except a LOT less rough, and so many to choose from, so the task of refining will be that much easier and faster.

Hey, fun topic, thanks for starting an original thread. They’re getting rare around here. 😉
Original? I think it might be a homage to this thread.. ;)

D'OH! Didnt know this existed.

But the examples there make for an educational comparison, and to Midge's (short for Midjourney) advantage.

No worries. ;)

The different AI systems are one thing, and I also think you chose a more involving title (= better "marketing") than @Glencoe. In some future, the more successful thread will probably be perceived as the original "watches designed with AI" thread, no matter if it actually came first or not.. ;)

Very creative, everyone!

I need MORE coffee to fully comprehend this thread.......

Hah, I concede. More eye catching avatar too. I might change my name to Glenopolis.

Gave Midjourney a try with a similar prompt, and picked variations of the first. It's a lot better, but for some reason neither of the initial 4 had numerals.

If you want it to have something specific, you have to put that in the prompt, or MJ will just do what it wants to. That being said, MJ has more of a mind of its own than some of the other art AI programs. It very often just ignores parts of prompts entirely

The first and last one are actually pretty cool. With a little refinement they could work!

The invention of film put untold portrait painters out of work. Such is the way of things.
Not really.

Portrait painters were always a highly expensive niche service. Film created many more jobs by democratizing the process and making the economics fit mass production.

So portrait painters go out of business and are replaced by this giant consumer industry of camera makers, film makers, film developers and printers. Not to mention studio portrait photographers. Because it is cheap enough for the average person to afford, but you can still charge for it. That's the analog logic of mass production.

Ai is different because the marginal cost isn't "cheaper". The marginal cost is basically zero. Imagine Henry Ford building a million cars year but only employing 10 production employees.

If ai pans out, you're destroying the jobs of many skilled professionals in design (or pick your thinking industry) and replacing them with far far fewer jobs in computer science. You're not creating a giant new consumer industry based on something that is newly affordable thanks to mass production. You're replacing 10,000 artists with 1 programmer.

Another example. Driving a vehicle is the #1 job category for men in 35 states. If self driving autonomous cars and trucks work out, you're replacing all those drivers with a much smaller number of tech wizards. You're not creating a huge new industry to employ people. You're making an existing on more efficient through digital processes that have a marginal cost of near zero.

Universal basic income anyone?

I did wonder if I should’ve used the search bar before saying it - but original to me at least!
