The spring that opens the cover broke.

IMG_3831.jpg

Mondaine has a policy that I can go jump in a lake. Their USA repair representatives are happy to help me choose which lake. Does anyone have a suggestion about getting/making a replacement spring? Does this part looks like a spring in a pocket watch made by a company that does care about their customers? I hate to throw a nice watch in the trash.

Not nice! I'd advise trying to find an external specialist who could make a new one. The first person I'd go to is a goldsmith, they may well work with steel as well and would be the right ones for smaller parts like that. In any case, even if they can't help, they may point you in the right direction. Good luck!

The spring looks like it was heated in 2 places.....not a pretty job. I don't remember seeing any of the better name vintage pocket watches with a spring that looks like that. But eh....more modern. Probably made in some shop in China. The watch may be Swiss but it does not mean they may not have gotten their springs in for a penny each from China. Anyway....Know anyone who can laser weld? A replacement can only be made or if you can find a junked one of the same watch you could scavenge one...but I don't think finding one would be easy.

Not knowing your background, and I am not looking to start anything....have you contacted any watchmakers? Sometimes these companies don't like selling to non watchmakers or service centers. And I just looked and they have their own service centers so they may restrict parts. Interesting but I would have thought they were owned another company or be part of another group....I guess not.

Thanks everyone! Exactly the advise I needed. I think I can buy a new Chinese pocket watch with the same spring. Thanks again.
