Mudmaster GWG-1000 annoyances

Got the watch 2 weeks ago. Before you lynch me, let me say that I am happy with it because of its fabulous design, construction, big size, syncing etc. In other words I would buy it again. However, there are things on the 'software' side that are bugging me quite a bit. I am posting this to know how do you cope with these… flaws (or maybe I am missing something….).

1. Maybe it's the Murphy's law but every time I want to do something that needs the digital display, the hands are on it. So I diligently press L+B (which is awkward btw, what about A+D for example?) to move them out, then try to set an alarm for example, but immediately the hands return on the display. Hands-off should be a toggle switch, not, as it is now, 'if you press any button the hands return to their normal positions', because that defeats the purpose.

2. Illumination. Press L to get the light, then after 3 seconds it goes off, not giving me the time to do pretty much anything other than checking the time. What's worse is that any button you push, the light goes immediately off! For example last night I was trying to set an alarm, which was 100% impossible because whatever button I push the light goes off. With my Suunto Core, for example, there is an option to make any button activate the backlight, so that it stays on as long as you push whatever. I know this is 'solar' and they are trying to make the charge last, but I think Casio should fix this.

3. Sound. This has also been said by others, the sound volume is ridiculously low so now I have to keep my phone on to wake up in the morning. From a watch this big it's frankly surprising and disappointing.

4. Display. Very hard to read so there should be an option to make it positive, if not possible Casio should offer some models in positive.

Other minor things don't bother me so much. Such as the tiny baro graph, the baro alarm which would be nice but beeps at any time so it wakes me up if the weather changes when I sleep, the power-saving time interval fixed to 22-6 (I happen to 'power-save' i.e. sleep from 4 to 11), the backwards month-day date (in Europe we use DD-MM), the lack of sunrise/sunset etc.

I am not trying to make a negative post here, as said I am happy because the watch is beautiful and does its basic job. However, since all these annoyances are ALL firmware related, and the watch is a two years old design, I think it would have taken little effort from Casio to fix them. I would be happy to ship the watch to Japan or wherever for a software update....

I guess I can untie the noose I was making just now.... ;)

I agree with most of what you said. Except I don't find the display hard to read at all. (nevertheless, Casio should offer 1-2 positive display versions for those who want them)

Re. what you said near the end about sending your watch back to Japan for an update - sadly, won't happen. Basically whatever functions, features (and imperfections) a g-shock might have from Casio, once you buy it that's the way it will be. Not counting the "smart" Protrek. There are no software/firmware updates.

Still, these are minor issues to me and do not impact my enjoyment of the Master of Mud.

Well... I noticed kind of the same. I paid 160 for the watch which was a bargain. It has the issues the op described and regardless of that I just keep wearing it. 5 of my other G's are seeing no use. I have started playing with outfits to ignore my fancy watches and wear it to work. It's massive, it's weird, and I love it. You can increase the amount of time the light is on but you'll have to read the manual which you can find online. I don't have problems reading the display but the hand does always seem to be over the date when I need it. That's not a big deal though I just have to look a bit closer one time a day at best. I'd add that I don't really feel like the hands illuminate at all and the piece that holds the strap down is constantly sliding and leaving a bunch of excess strap hanging. I still say it's a steal for the price you can pick this one up. It makes my other G's look like babies.

I can't "reply with quote" to your post due to forum issues.

Regarding: "What’s worse is that any button you push, the light goes immediately off!"

On most Casios, if you mute the button beeps, pressing a button will not immediately turn off the light. I'm not sure if this works on the Mudmaster as well, but it's worth a try.

Also, you can enable the auto light to more easily turn it on repeatedly, but this will require a lot of tilting of the wrist. It might be easier to just press the dedicated light button repeatedly.

I have muted the buttons, no luck, the light goes off. Watching telly now in dark living room, wanted to check the baro, light on, push mode button to go on baro, and the light goes off! Doesn't make any sense! Well I still love it but i hope some casio engineer is reading this...

3. Is a solar so the battery has properties that doesn't lend it to having a vigorous/loud alarm.

4. Display not an issue for me

1 & 2. Agreed. 'Clearing the window' and then pushing another function button I can see being not a doable fix. Not the worst thing, but is bothersome. The light thing is definitely something Casio could've done better. A hold down for as long as you need setting would've been nice.

Interesting to note that the OP lambasts the alarm on the watch as not being loud enough to wake him (the alarms on all G Shocks are pretty piss poor!), but the tiny beep on the Baro alarm has the ability to wake him LOL

I knew someone would have noticed that I was moaning about the alarms being not loud and yet the baro alarm bothers me ;-)
Part of my OCD I guess.... o|
Seriously though I have tried the alarm and it's a hit and miss, some mornings I can hear it, others I can't, so it's not reliable.

Anyway I am 50% happy that pretty much everyone agrees with most of my issues, and 50% sad that none of them can or will ever be fixed ( I was feebly hoping in some secret menu to change all these settings etc.).

At least you are 50% happy. That's better than being 100% sad... ;-):-d

If it helps, no watch is perfect. They all have down sides that are maybe annoying sometimes. Even the famous Frogman explodes in bathtubs, so just be glad the Mudmaster doesn't do that. The Mudmaster is however one of THE best analog watches out there. Keep in mind it can do quite a bit for a analog watch, though it is a little cumbersome. That second hand compass is awesome, by the way. My advice is forgive her faults and love her for what she is.

I am almost 100% happy with the Mudmaster though b-) despite the issues mentioned. See this is meant to be my last watch that's why it's so important to me. (Last and only, since I've sold my other three watches to finance the GWG).

Enjoy it, and wear it well.

I agree regarding the negative display. As much as I like the idea of blackout watches to concentrate the eye on time, not having a readable display in all conditions is a huge annoyance, especially when using the stopwatch. I also like seeing the day of the week clearly with three digits rather than two. Went with the GG-1000 in green band. Half the price, readable display, and three digit day. Unfortunately it is not as large. I think Casio should have produced at least one GWG model with a positive display or better still, a way of changing from negative to positive.

I have the Gulfmaster Q1000 with most of the same features, and consequently many of the same gripes. I've always admired my watch's cousin the Mudmaster. I've actually memorized the number of button presses to navigate modes and so forth, and the beeps help a lot with that. I know it's not a solution but it's sure makes using the features more enjoyable in low light situations. Then I can just activate the lume when I arrive at the right function. I think the G's might be meant for this, with the higher pitched tone when arriving at the timekeeping mode. Just a thought.

I thought it would be interesting to revisit these GWG-1000 complaints against the GWG-2000 (IMHO):

1. Hand-Shift Behavior: Same (missed opportunity)

2. Illumination Behavior: Same (missed opportunity)

3. Alarm: Improved? I don't hear GWG-2000's alarm any different from my other G-Shocks

4. Display: Improved? It looks good to me with decent viewing angles. Comments from people who own both watches, indicate a better display on the GWG-2K, mostly.

1 & 2 are not Mudmaster issues only, of course.

No. 1 (HS): It should be smarter. Not only hands should move out of the way, depending on which function you're using but they should stay that way as long as needed, not until the watch decides it's been long enough. Either that or an on/off switch should be provided (i.e. long press A+B or B+L)

No. 2: Similar to No. 1. There should be an on/off backlight switch (i.e. 5 sec L press). What's the worst thing that can happen if you leave the backlight on? You'll need a new CTL1616 cell? (Perhapps CASIO is worried somebody may sue them because their TS watch battery didn't last 20 years?)
