Microbrands are doing some very interesting things right now and the latest to launch a new design is MW Timepieces. And wow, do its new pieces ever look slick.

So who is MW Timepieces? This brand is made up of a group of designers and watch enthusiasts based in Indonesia who came together with a common mission in mind – create striking designs with excellent craftsmanship and proper quality control. The new LEGATODIVER pieces feature split personalities, elegant design during the day and wild, envelope-pushing lume at night.

Let’s start with everything that’s obvious in the daylight. Looking at the LEGATODIVER, you just get a sense that the people at MW Timepieces love music. The whole case back is designed in homage to acoustic guitars, ornate engraving on stainless steel complements stripes of tinting on sapphire crystal designed to mimic guitar strings. Under that case back sits Sellita’s SW200-1 automatic movement, a 26-jewel unit with 26 hours of power reserve and a date complication at 6 o’clock. Not bad.

Water resistance is a stout 30 ATM, a testament to the sealing of the solid 39.5 mm 316L brushed stainless case and to MW Timepieces’ serious intentions to create a proper dive watch. As for the dial, it’s available in a variety of finishes and features tasteful round batons with a triangular 12 o’clock marker, a restrained logo and really pleasant fonts. Adding to legibility is sapphire crystal glass coated in 10 layers of anti-reflective coating. Impressive stuff at this end of the market. Add in some very colorful options for the 120-click rotating bezel, and you have the makings of a very distinctive piece.

Adding to the distinction is the wild lume I mentioned earlier. It starts with a lumed-out bezel that pops off your wrist in a soft blue glow. Inspired by a guitar’s fretboard, Super-Luminova BGW9 gets laid into the bezel, then the whole thing gets capped off with flat sapphire crystal. Not content on stopping there, MW Timepieces has also filled the crown with Super-Luminova BGW9 that lights up the MW insignia. Add in a luminous dial, luminous date font and luminous hands, and this is a collection that’s outrageous at night.

As MW Timepieces is a very design-heavy team, it should be no surprise that an impressive array of colorways is on offer. All pieces come with both a bracelet and a calfskin leather strap, with the strap often matching the theme of each watch. For instance, the Kickstarter-exclusive red colorway features a red bezel and a red strap. The dark sunburst blue colorway features a dark sunburst blue dial, but also a blue-lined bezel and a deep blue leather strap with light blue stitching. There’s also a blacked-out spec on offer with all-black everything, a model with a light sunburst blue dial and a black case, a white-dial model with a stainless case and a black-dial model with a stainless case on offer. Genuinely something for everyone, from those who want to shout to those who want to make a quiet statement of individuality.

Blending fashion with function is no easy task, but it seems as if the team at MW Timepieces has pulled it off. Guitar fans out there, this one’s for you.
