My take on 41 vs 36 datejust, AD games

Hello folks,

This is my first post to the Rolex section. Also this is my first Rolex, a datejust 36 Wimbledon and I absolutely love it. I purchased it second hand in September after little movement from ADs for months. Grail watch for sure, I don’t think I’d ever sell it. BUT, after initial thoughts, I paused - maybe it’s just a little too small. But that’s ok, I planned to wear it with business attire, which it excels with.

So after many more months, I purchased this datejust 41 on oyster with a white stick dial to be a little more casual. This was also secondhand. To be honest, it’s quite large… and I’ve owned planet oceans and luminors. I have a 7.25 wrist it’s just one extreme to the other. I really wish they made a 39 or something similar to my Aqua Terra.

On top of it being pretty large, honestly I hate the polished oyster bracelet. I knew it would be a scratch magnet but it’s also just not that comfortable. I actually went to the AD nearby and ordered a jubilee bracelet for it from Rolex. I bought both of these watches secondhand because I could never get anything from the AD.

Two days after I purchased the bracelet I received a text saying thank you for your interest in these other models, which leads me to believe that they will actually sell me new models. I know you have to establish a relationship but I feel a mix of happiness and annoyance because I already thought I was on a waiting list. I’m thinking I actually only got on the list just now lol.

Anyway, the TLDR is I think the 36 is the better watch. And always, if you don’t like your Rolex chances are it’s worth more than you paid!

I used to think like this current trend, but recently, with a smaller wrist then yours - 6.7", have actually considered that 41mm is better. Obviously it depends on the design of the watch and lug-to-lug. But I think presence, clarity and a little bit of masculinity are desirable, without anything too much. The problem with 39mm and below, is that they look too much like a bracelet, like jewellery. This is absolutely fine if thats what you are looking for, and I love the 27mm Tiffany Maker watch which has this feel. But I think sports watches just look better at 41 or 42mm.

I just tried on a 42mm all gold Chopard LUC - just thinking how I am going to hide it from my wife :)

This is my new 41mm love, after selling on my 36mm version ...

thanks for the write up.
i'm surprised you wear the Seamaster but found the 41mm DJ too big ?.. anyway, your take on this is well appreciated.
nice watches BTW.
the 41mm is a great watch and works better for me (if i could get one).

I tried on some watches at an AD this weekend. Got on the list for a steel/domed/oyster/blue DJ36. I feel like that's the perfect classic size that will still look good when I'm old. SA said it could be as long as next year but I'm OK with waiting.

I think the 36mm Wimbledon looks great on your wrist. The fluted bezel makes the watch wear a bit larger than other 36mm watches. I love 36mm watches and my Rolex AD (who got me a DJ41 last year) is trying to get me a 36mm Wimbledon like yours. Re: the DJ41, it is actually 39.5 mm, but a white dial makes yours look bigger. Here is my black dial DJ41 on my 6.75" wrist.

I don’t like the bloated dial on the 41 or 39 for that matter. Though the size is okay for me, it is the ascetic that that I’m not fond of. I can’t get over how the 41 OP/DJ dial is bigger than a 41 Sub.

I understand the 41 suits many and is a great modern 3 hander, though I like the classic look better. More of a cut down Sub with the 36.

I agree the 16570 Explorer II is a better fit for a 40mm watch. Imho I think it’s one of the best options on the market in the Explorer range, much preferring the beautiful 5 digit case over modern irritations.

I had tried the Aqua Terra, great size, but you talk about a terrible bracelet, that one was TERRIBLE.

I have 7 1/2 inch wrists. I was actually nervous that the 41mm was too small. This of course is after wearing my 47mm Panerai 1389 a month straight lol.

I was also nervous that the fluted bezel would be too bling, but when I’m wearing it out and about, the bling blends in and it’s not very noticeable.

I hope you never mentioned anything about values and selling, that would definitely work against you big time as you would come across as a flipper.

My experience ended up being pretty easy. I had a nice conversation with the AD. Talked genuinely about my love of watches and the Rolex brand. Told her I wanted a white stick dial DJ41 on Jubilee with flat bezel.

A few weeks ago, I got a call out of the blue that they had the watch, but with the fluted. That worked out better as I had changed my mind to go Fluted. No relationship, no purchase history, 5 month wait with no expectation they would call.

There are so many variations, not everybody wants to settle for taking just any. If you really want it, just touch base on person when in the area. The list is move-upable.

I love the classic 36 DJ, I feel like the all watch presents way more balance, and is more elegant, and the DJ has quite long lugs, that adds to the perceived size.
This being said, mine is a 5 digits so it might wear different, with the brushed lugs.
Anyways, great looking DJ OP!
Cheers

I have the same exact Omega and feel the same way about the Rolex sizing. The 41 wore too large for me. The 36 is perfect but could be a touch bigger. I think they need a 38-39 in the line up. I ended up going 36.

Well gents, an update. I just had my 41 fitted with a jubilee bracelet at the AD. I have to say it totally changed the look and comfort of the watch. I can’t say how much of an improvement this is. I went so far as to update my request on my GMT to jubilee only. The white dial and smooth bezel on this bracelet make this look timeless.
