I appear to be in the minority on this thread about the Marine. I think the prior version looked fine but wasn't very interesting—the 5817 and the like:
The lugs were too damn long, the straps were okay but not horribly interesting, but they did have gold keepers, which was very cool, mind you. But the spiral guillochage didn't do anything for me. What it does have over the new gen is the cleanliness of dial; those Romans are better than the new ones. The base marine is okay, but not as enticing as I'd like.
The blue dial and waves are so much prettier. the lugs are more muted, and on a bracelet, this looks great. The standout of the new Marine is the 5547 Alarme Musicale:
This works. It sounds great. Not that the prior gen didn't sound great either, since it did, but this one is also better aesthetically, to me. This also goes for the standard Hora Mundi 5557:
Either one here is a delight. One of each, please! Perhaps the best case to be made for the new gen is the Equation de Temps Marchante, which I've been personally acquainted with:
This thing is great, but costs what a house did almost 20 years ago, so probably not in my range. It does, however, kick all kinds of ass, including in the finishing department.
