Hi Guys,
Out of curiosity, I have been looking at my watches and all of them have some some degree of play/wobble on the crowns, albeit on some such as the BN0000-04H or other eco-drives the play is so slight could only be seen by looking at it up very close. My question is, would all brands have some play/wobble to some degree owing to the fact that the crown mechanism is basically a long thin screw with a big metal cap at the end which would lend itself to some play anyway?

Also if a crown was proving fiddly to screw down as can often happen with varying brands, would it be easy to damage a crown if your thumb slipped off the crown when applying pressure to it to screw it down or are they resilient enough. I don't mean cross threading in this case, I mean are the crowns resilient to slight alterations of pressure when screwing down. Apart from the obvious how would you know if one had been damaged. Apologies if its quite a specific question, just feeling curious today .
All the best.

A bit of lateral movement is quite normal.
Your concerns are quite valid, imo, hence I have always wound the watch, etc, with the watch off the wrist.

Apply pressure to the crown, rotate counter-clockwise until you feel it drop into the threads, then tighten...

I think the OP is worried about possible damage to the stem in case he applies excessive lateral force while pressing down on the crown?
( I understood his post that way)

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies. All very helpful. Exactly right too Janne, its the lateral force tolerances on the stem that I was really curious about. Just really at their tolerance to withstand normal everyday stuff like I was saying before, say if your thumb slipped or something while pushing in to screw down or that kind of thing.
Thanks again.
