I love watches! I am have been collecting for 3 years now and since I can't afford to spend a lot on watches I have thought of ways to get them cheap. I go to flea markets, estate sales, public auctions, I put up fliers in laundromat and any place that has a public bulletin board. I placed an add in the paper asking for vintage WATCHES to people looking for extra x-mas cash and got this fish on the line today. Very nice condition. Has 1570 movement 62510H bracelet with 574 end links. Checked and verified 14k gold bezel and bracelet but want to know if dial looks ok? And please let me know if you have any other ways to get vintage watches. Or what extent you have gone to get a watch. On a couple occasions I have slept all night in my truck to be first in line at an estate sale to get a watch that I want. Thank you for your input. And sorry for bad pics but only have my camera phone! 1543712518967668483321_1543712636307.jpg 1543712518967668483321_1543712636307.jpg

I love your enthusiasm, but with all due respect, it's pointless to post terrible photos and then apologize for them. Most of us use our phones for our watch photos, and they are perfectly adequate because they are clear and focused. You need to learn how to focus on the watch.

My gut feeling is that the dial looks ok, although possible a service dial. I have a feeling that the watch has some condition issues, but I'll refrain from commenting without better photos.

The last photo is fine, I was referring to the others being out of focus. 1K in what currency?

Your phone appears to be able to produce decent if not outstanding photos but most of the ones that you’ve posted are just badly out of focus so I think your phone is just fine.

Most of the time I will shoot at least half a dozen shots of each view I want, moving the phone each time. Sometimes you’ll hit lucky and one will be nicely in focus. If not try again. Digital photos are free, it costs nothing but time to take them and delete them.

Sorry, a large percentage of the images shown here had been taken with a phone and most of them look good. If you really should have a phone producing such crappy pictures, get a new one before you spend 1K for a used Rolex. If you are satisfied with the images, you have to be satisfied that they can never serve you to ask the questions you have put forward and expect sensible answers. But I am convinced, that even the very first generation and the cheapest models can do better than that. Give it a try!

I am impressed by your enthusiasm, especially to sleep in a truck to be the first in line at an estate sale. I sleep at home and look around at eBay, or go to auctions, where I can be the last one entering the room - I just have to hold up my number long enough to get the watch I urgently want. Admittedly, that doesn't give me the cheapest deals, but a lot of time for other things to do. And then, after decades of collecting, it's about time to think the other way around and let people stand in line at your own garage sale...

i enjoy the hunt aa much as anything. It helps keep me young. The feeling you get when you find an old or rare watch and i have some mice ones you will never get from walking into a room late and lifting your paddle but hey to each his own.

Dial could be a service dial. Lume plots seem a lot lighter than the lume in the hands.

Cannot really comment on the movement with these pics.

Anyway, 1K is a very, very good deal.

Re phone cameras, it takes practice to get good shots of watches. The crystal tends to grab the autofocus software and leaves the dial out of focus, but as noted above, by taking a number of pictures you can outsmart the autofocus. Let it settle on the spot you want to focus on, then take several shots while varying the distance a bit.

It wasn't until I tried selling a few vintage watches that I hit on a process of getting clear, accurate photos of them. It paid off in terms of auction prices, for sure.

The only success I have with the iPhone camera is to rest the phone on a tall water glass--or something similar--to hold it still while I focus and shoot. And then still take a lot of photos.

All of my photos, both here and on IG are taken with my iPhone, and while I may not be the most artistic photographer in the world, I think that the pics are pretty clear and in-focus. It can definitely be done with some practice. And there are some tricks; for example, you can tap the screen on the area where you want the camera to focus.

I've gotten a few good deals on vintage watches at estate sales, but i rarely get the nicest ones because i'm not willing to sleep in my car to get them so i lose out to those of you that do. Most of the estate sale adds that i see don't even mention or show watches even though you may see some in the background of some photos...often amongst the costume jewelry in the obligatory "JEWELRY!" photo.

Can sometimes snatch them on ebay if they are newly listed and Buy-It-Now...rarely get a deal on any ebay auction.

I have slept in my truck on two occasions to be first at an estate sale.
The first time I got a longiness chronograph with valjoux 72. Paid 450.00 worth north of 2500.00 all original never polished one owner. The second time I got a Breitling chronomat 769 from 1945. Near NOS. Paid 350.00 worth north of 4500.00. So the risk swas worth the reward. I always weigh the risk reward factor and on both those occasions it paid off. It may not be justifiable to everyone but for me I enjoy the hunt . 20181118_153946_1544062568711.jpg

Dont forget thrift stores. I have found them to have loads of vintage watches over the years.

I just got a 1953 Bulova Air King for $30 at one and that watch (with its Art Deco outside numbers) seems to sell for $300 to $700.

On Saturday I went to another thrift store and came across a nice vintage Tag Heuer quartz diver that the person in front of me passed up due to him thinking it was a fake. It was not. i bought it for $24.99 plus tax and took it home to put a battery in it. The watch is a harder to find Series 1000 Professional diver with the blue bezel and blue dial. eBAY shows the watch to sell from $400 to $800 depending on the condition. Mine is in good condition. So for slightly $30(watch price and battery price), I got a nice authentic Tag.

Here are a few pics.

The pic of the Bulova Air King is terrible. For some reason I could not get my phone camera to behave on this. The name Bulova is fully intact on the dial.

In the 1980’s, I had to visit Las Vegas almost every winter for a whole week (yawn...), this for trade conventions.
Good thing there were all the pawn shops: what the one-armed bandits couldn’t get from me, these full-flesh raiders managed. Now the odds there were much better than on the Strip...
