Two Swiss vintage re-issues, with blocky lumed 12-3-6-9 indices, very similar sizes and (at least gray market) similar prices. Which do you go for and why?

That one is tough but I'll have to say oris. I slightly prefer this bezel, markers, 6 oclock date, and lugs of the oris. I like the handset and bracelet on the zodiac.

I should mention I have no plans to wear either on a bracelet, so the strap that it comes with is mostly irrelevant to me.

Buy both of them. Wear them each for a week. Keep the one you like the best. Sell the other one to me at a discount.
Hope this helps!

I agree. Get both and keep the one you prefer. It's a tough battle. Could do either way. It's a mater of taste.
I'd say the zodiac seems more vintage to me and it has their new in house mvt . It'll also wear bigger. The Oris case is very thin and it wears small. That's the reason I didn't get it in the first place. After trying it on I cancelled my order. Zodiac can be had much cheaper used.

The oris gets my vote! I prefer the bezel, date window and hands of the oris.

I prefer the Oris 42 over both, but of these two I say Zodiak. I've never warmed up to those Oris 40 numerals. They look too cartoonish to me. I know some people love them though.

Well if they put the date at 4 o'oclock on the Zodiak that would have been an improvement. It totally ruins the flow of 3,6,9,12. The Oris at least were able to keep most of the integrity of the "6". Go with the Oris in the name of Symmetry!

The only thing I see going for the Oris is the domed sapphire. Otherwise, it's a generic bezel, generic movement, simple handset, and aesthetics that looks like a toddler design it. The Zodiac has a nice bracelet, in-house movement, and great looking aesthetics. The difference in price new is pretty substantial, and I can't for the life of me see how the price is justified with the Oris. So even getting both at a bargain, the Zodiac is still the only one that actually is one.

Just a heads up, if you sign up for their newsletter, Watch Station provides a 15% off code bringing the Zodiac to sub $500. I'm sorely tempted...

At that price, it's Zodiac for me hands down. The Oris 42 looks darn good but the specs don't do it for me at the price range.

^^^This. The cartoony numerals are awful (re-issue or not) so rejected in a nano-second. The Zodiac OTOH is a joy to behold (date window notwithstanding), especially on a strap, and the recent price reduction makes this a no-brainer. May well get one myself...
