Hi All, looking to become a fellow Paneristi.

Trying to understand what, if any, difference there might be in cost of ownership between the PAM 000 and a PAM 1000. I know the 1000 has the in-house P600 movement, so I would anticipate this being more expensive than the basic ETA/Unitas 6497 for servicing. I plan to keep this watch for a long time and give to my son someday.

I am selling my Omega Planet Ocean (with in-house co-axial movement) because I freaked when my local watch guy told me he couldn't work on it and it would likely be $1,000+ to send to Omega because it is in-house movement.

I am less concerned about the Screw bar vs spring bar; Multiple piece case vs single piece case; Screw back vs snap back; 300m vs 100m of WR.

My dilemma is that it does appear that I could get a 1000 for less $$ in a newer condition. Would love any advice the forum can provide.

000 is the pick of the 2 IMO for all the reasons you have quoted.

Servicing of a good old ETA will always be less than returns to Panerai for specialist attention.

A recent example was my PAM 25 which has an ETA movement, had a crown stem problem and the repair was £75 all in, the quote for a return to Panerai was £300+ if it had been an in house movement.

My 1005 (bought last year) has a Unitas movement called OP II. It can be serviced easily, from what I understand.

The new Panerai Logo (from 773 to 778) has in-house movements : they will need Panerai repair service only.
So you can get the 000 or the 1000 series with no problem.

"I can get a 1000 for less $$$ and in newer shape..."

There is probably a reason for that.
1000: 100 m wr. Back is a kind of «.push.» system.
000: 300 m wr. Back is screwed
Both use Unitas movements.

I think the current pricing for a full service at Omega is in the $700 range. Not a good reason to sell and take a loss on the watch.

I got the PAM 000, I too am using it and then giving it to my son in the future (when i have a son). But, probably going to get a Patek in a few years. But the PAM000 diving meter is way higher than the PAM01000 thats for sure. Ive had my pam 000 for few years and no need for a service.

I read that servicing the co-axial movement is tricky and needs special training for it. you can't have too little or too much oil in the escapement or something.

But I would place the watch itself as a higher priority than the service cost alone. If 000 has higher asking price AND everybody you asked recommends 000 over 1000, there must be a good reason for it. :)

just sayin'
