Football (soccer) is the most popular sport in the world. In 1930, the Federation Inernationale deFootball Association (FIFA) put on the inaugural World Cup tournament to findthe best soccer players in the world. InFIFA history, few football programs have been as successful or prolific as theBrazilian Football Confederation. Since1923, CBF has grown to over 18,000 football clubs. In addition, the national team is the onlyteam to have played in every World Cup, and is the only team to win it 5times. While Brazil’s prowess infootball is long-standing, Latin America’s influence in the world of high-endwatchmaking is only just taking off. Oneof the first companies to tap into this growing market was ParmigianiFleurier.

Taking its name from the most skilled restorer in Switzerland,Parmigiani is a 19-year old company with one of the longest and most prolifichistories in the world of watches. Touring Parmigiani factories today, you willsee dials for A. Lange & Söhne, cases for MB&F, bracelets for AudemarsPiguet, and micro-rotors for Patek Philippe, to name just a few. Parmigiani’scontracts with these brands demonstrates the high quality of its production.

So what happens when the finest watchmakers in the world partnerwith the greatest soccer confederation in history?

We humbly present the pinnacle of both worlds: the ParmigianiFleurier Transforma CBF.

Is it a pocket watch, a wrist watch, or a luxurious tableclock? Yes!

This innovative devise is actually three intricately engineeredmechanisms: A single module housing the timekeeping apparatus, a steel carriageattached to a strap, and one attached to a fob. As well, the beautifullyfinished wooden winder provides a luxurious perch that turns the watch into atable clock.

The timekeeping unit of this masterpiece is encased in shotblasted carbon fiber. Not only does this produce a beautiful coloration andtexture, but it also solves a major design problem. Extra steel is required tohold the module in the wristwatch and pocket watch carriages. Carbon fiberdrastically reduces the weight of the module, preventing the watch from restingtoo heavily on your wrist, or in your pocket.

The carbon fiber case houses a beautifully finished, in-housechronograph movement: the PF334. The same movement is used in another ofParmigiani’s CBF edition watches: the Pershing CBF. This automatic movement isa masterpiece of engineering that took several years of research and developmentto realize. Comprised of 303 components, including an astonishing 68 jewels and powerful dual barrels, the PF334 is ableto maintain accurate timekeeping for 50 hours. Fortunately for us, Parmigianiis home to many expert craftsman who spend hours finishing these movementcomponents by hand. The outcome is a perfectly engraved guilloché rotor, andbridges and plates featuring the Côtes de Genève decoration.

A sapphire crystal on the back of the case provides a window intothe heart and soul of this magnum opus. This crystal is held in place by a steel case back inscribed with thewords, “CONFEDERACAO BRASILEIRA DE FUTEBOL,” and the watch number.

Also adorning this carbon fiber module are the steel crown andpushers which activate the chronograph.

For many watches, the personality is derived primarily from thedial. In any of its forms, this watch is no exception. Moreover, we wereoffered the opportunity to appreciate the partnership with the BrazilianFootball Confederation. Parmigiani has accented the dial with Brazil’semblematic colors: green, yellow, and blue. The background of this graphite-platedgalvanic black dial features a subtle texture, reminiscent of the meticulouslygroomed fields of professional soccer stadiums.

Working our way from the outside of the watch towards the center,we see a rather thick ring accented with a tachymeter. This speed measuringdevice is comprised of white train tracks, and yellow Arabic numerals.

857132455_o.jpg

A step inside the tachymeter presents us with three sub-dials. Atthree o’clock rests the perpetually running secondhand with indices in white, and Arabic numerals and hands in green. At six and nine o’clock the chronographhours and minutes sub-dials are outlined in silver. This outline breaks up themonotony of the dark dial by providing enough contrast to keep the eyeentertained. It also acts as a separation to accent the delicate guilloche workon each dial. These two sub-dialsfeature white indices and Arabic numerals, and blue hands. Inside the sub-dialat 6 o’clock sits the elongated date window. The black Arabic numerals arepresented against a silver background.

At 12 o’clock you will find the Parmigiani Fleurier logo withinan ellipse, resting atop the dial like a halo. Upon closer inspection, fivegreen stars appear along the upper edge of the tachymeter. These stars represent Brazil’s five World Cuptitles.

The second’s hand for the chronograph function is yellow and centeredon the dial. The hour and minute hands are centered as well. These delta-shapedhands, along with the rhodium plated indices, are coated with luminescence.

The timekeeping module is a work of art on its own, butParmigiani did not stop there. They created two perfect carriages for theirwork. The first is a steel cage adorned with a supple black alligator strap andsteel deployant buckle. The cage can be opened by pressing the two nodes oneither side of the top lugs. When in place, it is difficult to tell that hisstunning watch is actually two separate parts. With a case diameter of only43mm, the watch is particularly comfortable on the wrist.

If you are in the mood for a classic, formal look, than just popthe module out of its wristwatch cage and into the pocket watch carriage. Thestainless steel cage features an identical locking mechanism and is attached toa 16” steel fob.

Finally, this masterpiece can be turned into an elegant tableclock by placing the completed wristwatch into the ebony Macassar woodenwinder. When the watch is fully wound, it will stop in a vertical orientation, showcasing this watch as the perfect table clock. Furthermore, the wooden boxfeatures drawers to house the fob and other accessories.

Life is a moving, breathing, living thing. All life must bewilling to constantly evolve as the only true perfection comes through constanttransformation. The Parmigiani Fleurier Transforma is the ideal companion—itprovides the inspiration to reach for that perfection.

Thank you for the report.

I looked at one, and it's a gorgeous watch, but ended up buying a different Parmigiani. I think the transforming is interesting, but does not seem to merit the effort and the premium charged. I prefer the Hemispheres and the Quator.

Pretty trick. A bit busy on the dial, but certainly looks very well made.

I agree. The Annual Calendar module is a little cleaner and easier to read. This is the same movement they put in the Tonda Quator.
