MUST HAVES:
  • Quartz movement with auto calendar
  • Design emphasis on clean and readable
  • Can be LCD-only OR analog + LCD date
  • Not huge
  • Big lume or illuminator
NICE TO HAVES:
Width preferably smaller than 45mm. (small wrist).
Solar powered
Auto EL

DON'T MIND HAVING:
Tide + moon phase
Radio sync (I live out of range of the 6 beacons)

DO NOT LIKE:
Chronometer-like sub dials
Big bezels

I am OK with the appearance of the 5600 series although it does look like a lot of wasted "border" bulk, that would have been better if the LCD were bigger instead.

These designs come close to what I am looking for:

GWX-5600-1JF
One of the plainer GShock series. I would choose one without contrast colored "PROTECTION, TOUGH SOLAR, G-SHOCK" etc.

G-7800 series
I prefer all black bezel, but with positive LCD.

G-056 series
Case colors are OK, but I prefer normal positive LCD.

Edifice EFA134SB
Would prefer a thinner outside "border" without the cities and tachy.

Citizen Atessa ATV53-2834
Love the size and shape of the hands and hour markers, but would like bigger matrix LCDs instead of all those subdials.

My new purchase is meant to replace my present 24/7 wear watch: Seiko SBQJ015, which looks like this:

I prefer my GW9200 Riseman to any of the models you've posted - for the money (from about $130 if I recall), it is a truly amazing watch.

There's the GW-5500, not sure about the size, but it's solar/atomic, a square, very crisp display (negative display, most of the time), normal G-Shock toughness, all the usual G-Shock features (200m water resist, shock resist, stop watch, timer, etc.) Although it doesn't have the tide and moon graphs, and being that it's solar and atomic, I'd assume it has Auto EL. (I don't personally own one, but I've wanted one for a while). I've seen them usually for about $180-$250 (maybe a bit more than you expected, but I don't know your price range).

I recommend the GW-5600J

It has the largest digits of any g-shock I've had and it is obviously very legible. I sold mine but here a photo (It is on a composite bracelet here, but it does not come with that. It comes with a normal resin band)

Can be had for $60 (with the normal resin band)

The following come to mind when you want small, clean and readable:
G-8000-1V

G-7710-1

G-7600 (also comes in other colors):

Or maybe a Pathfinder PAW-500 - one of the cleanest display layouts:

cheers, Sedi :)

"Understated" is not a word I'd use for any of the g-shocks.
Ok... how about the Edifices, or other Casio sub-brands? Seems like I have to ask about those in this "G-Shock" forum?
Probably best to stick with a 5600 type. GLX5600 is one of the classiest looking ones, with tide/moon, but no solar/atomic.
Thanks. Can anyone paste or link to a glossary that explains the Casio naming system? From what I saw on wikipedia, W is for the "waveceptor" radio-sync, M for the multi-band waveceptor. What about D? L? X?

Did you mod this yourself or can you buy it like that?
