Put these brands in a tier

Okay, so let me start out by saying I know this is going to be super subjective and that’s okay. There are no wrong answers here.

Thought it might be fun to put these 15 popular brands (at least on the forums) in your own tiers from best to worst in terms of quality & value based on your opinions/experiences/research.

Some may fall into the same level and some you may feel are light years above or below. Some you may not be familiar with or don’t have an opinion on which is fine but please don’t base this on your personal taste in terms of looks (for example, don’t put Panerai at the bottom just because you don’t like their look even though you’d agree that there quality and value is better than “x”). Otherwise, participate however you see fit - you can make your tiers and name them however you want.

Okay, here are the brands (and yes, I left a bunch out):

Rolex
Omega
Longines
Tag Heuer
Nomos
Ball
Breitling
Zenith
Grand Seiko
Cartier
Sinn
Oris
IWC
Tudor
Panerai

PS: if someone knows how to make this a tier poll link so people don’t have to refer back to these brands and type it out please do let me know!

That's bait.
I'll bite.

Tier One
-Rolex
-Omega
-Grand Seiko
-IWC

Tier Two
-Tudor
-Breitling
-Cartier
-Panerai

Tier Three
-Longines
-Tag Heuer
-Nomos
-Zenith
-Oris

Tier Four
-Ball
-Sinn

Not in order, just in groups. Shred me, WUS.
Mostly agree but I'd have made only three tiers with Ball and Sinn in tier 3. I love Oris but unregulated Sellita a tier above what Sinn is doing?

Why not? In no particular order in the tiers.

Tier 1
Rolex
Omega
Zenith
Grand Seiko
Cartier
IWC

Tier 2
Nomos
Tudor
Panerai

Tier 3
Longines
Tag Heuer
Ball
Breitling
Sinn

Tier 4
Oris

There is a site that actually ranked basically every watch brand

I'm surprised how many people have Zenith in a lower tier than I expected.

There is a French saying "Chacun voit midi à sa porte" which translates into "everyone sees noon at his own door", and that's why I won't answer your OP request, as I wouldn't want to get into any debates.

As to your surprise why so many people have Zenith in a lower tier, and the same applies to Panerai in this thread, is because people tend to favor the brands they prefer based on their own experiences and their lack of intimate knowledge in the the brands they are not interested in.

As an example, most people when they think of Zenith, the first image that comes to their mind is this, a Chronomaster

15567696

But, they most probably never heard of the Zenith Academy Georges Favre-Jacot with Fusée and Chain

15567697

When it comes to Panerai, most people would think of a basic $5K Panerai like this PAM773 (by the way, this is the cheapest Panerai in the catalog)

15567699

But, how many know about the PAM600, a Minute Repeater Carillon Tourbillon GMT?

Interesting to see how you all reank the brands so far. My groups would look quite differently, in fact.

Tier 1
IWC
Cartier
Panerai

Tier 2
Rolex
Omega
Breitling
Grand Seiko
Zenith

Tier 3
Longines
Tag Heuer
Nomos
Ball
Sinn
Oris
Tudor

The reason why I don't see Rolex and Omega in the top tier is because they just don't make the same level of horological complications IWC, Cartier and Panerai produce.

for me:
Tier 1
Rolex, while I get some stigma with the brand, I think there is gap between them and any of the others in this list

Tier 2 - maybe can split this one up, but I view these as pretty similar:
Omega
Grand Seiko
IWC
Zenith
Panerai
Cartier
Tudor
Breitling

Tier 3
Nomos
Tag Heuer

Tier 4
Longines
Sinn
Oris
Ball

You frame the question in an interesting light, "quality and value" and I think you get very different results depending on which of these two posters focus on. For example, Tudor vs Rolex, Tudor wins every day on bang for your buck but most would agree Rolex the higher quality.

Heres my 2 cents, one for quality, one for value:

Best value:

Tier 1
Longines
Nomos
Tudor
Oris

Tier 2
Rolex @ MRSP
Omega
Grand Seiko
IWC
Breitling

Tier 3
Tag Heuer
Cartier
Ball
Zenith
Sinn
Panerai
Rolex @ Grey

Quality:

Tier 1
Rolex
Omega
Grand Seiko
IWC
Zenith

Tier 2
Breitling
Tudor
Cartier
Panerai
Nomos

Tier 3
Tag Heuer
Longines

Tier 4
Ball
Sinn
Oris

They obviously all start in Tier 3 in the greater watch world. Exclusivity means limited numbers produced, high craftsmanship, hand made from start to finish, artisan, ability to make complications, luxury materials etc. Think art. If there is just one of a Picasso it's $50M and if it's Banksy 'Girl with Balloon' which is one of 300 it's $300K. The more of a watch the less value. My car is 1 of 400 in the world and it's gone up in price over the 5 years I've owned it, as an example.

Tier 1: PP, VC, AP and maybe ALS
Tier 2: ALS, JLC, Blancpain, Breguet etc.
Tier 3: Rolex, IWC, Omega

And the list goes from there.

.....
I think respondents should indicate which brands they own, so we can see bias :)

Here's my opinion, completely sorted. I make no claim to authority and know almost nothing about some of these brands.

IWC
Rolex
Zenith*
Omega#
-----------Tier 1 cut-off------
Grand Seiko
Cartier
Tudor
Breitling#
Tag Heuer*
Nomos#
Longines*
Panerai
----Tier 2 cut-off-----------
Oris
Sinn
Ball

*Brands I own
#Brands I like but don't currently own

I'm thinking here in terms of the extent to which any brand manufactures all of their watches stem-to-stern, the build quality thereof, the design of complications or unique movements, and the use of precious metals or exotic materials.

Omega
Rolex
Zenith
Grand Seiko
Cartier
------------ Tier 1 cutoff --------------
IWC
Panerai
Tag Heuer
Tudor
Breitling
------------ Tier 2 cutoff --------------
Longines
Nomos
Sinn
Oris
Ball

Interesting how much respect Omega is getting. I think I hang around the Rolex Forums too much where they put even Tudor far ahead of Omega. I figured they would get no respect like GS, Zenith, and IWC are getting from some people.

I haven’t owned an IWC or Omega yet but would like to one day. I have owned just about everything else though and Zenith and GS are impressive of pieces kit. Definitely same tier as Rolex.

Being the OP, it's only fair that I do it as well so here it goes using 5 tiers:

Tier 1:
Rolex
Grand Seiko*

Tier 2:
Omega*
Zenith
IWC
Panerai

Tier 3:
Tudor*
Cartier*
Breitling*

Tier 4:
Longines*
Nomos*
Ball

Tier 5:
Tag Heuer*
Sinn
Oris

* for brands I've owned
Nice joke!
