Question re: Miyota 9015 movement

Hi and thanks in advance for the help.

I have a Tisell Marine Diver, Miyota 9015 movement. It is the only mechanical I own in addition to my Seiko 5 SNK809, which runs Seiko 7S26. I bought the Tisell I would say March or April 2020. I’ve been learning about mechanicals since that time. I know Miyota 9 series is rated less accurately than my results, but I have been getting a timing of -8/9 seconds daily; I have been in the habit of setting the time once per week, when it is a minute off. I let it go two weeks this time, and it was only 1.5 minutes off. I’m really happy with the accuracy for $300 bucks.

I have one concern. I had been in the habit of hand winding the watch every two weeks to keep the mainspring loaded (I usually wear the watch daily, only recently been rotating the SNK809 1-2 times per week as it is a recent purchase). The concern is the last 2-3 weeks, when I try and hand-wind it, I no longer hear that little ‘click’ that denotes a full rotation. Today, I set the time using Time.is, and noticed something else too. When I pulled the crown out all the way to hack the second hand, it jolted back the slightest amount before stopping, even before I adjusted the minute hand.

Am I having any problems with this movement? Is the backwards jolt and lack of click a problem with the movement or crown? I still get the same accuracy, and the watch stays working even when off my wrist for 24 hours from just being wound by wearing it.

Also, should I be winding it manually every few weeks? I tried to read about Miyota on a few websites but could not find this answer.

I was not aware there is any way to hear when the watch is fully wound. There’s certainly no reason to wind it if you wear it daily, but I haven’t heard that it will damage the movement. Obviously there will be more wear and tear on the crown and stem the more you use it.

Shouldn’t be a need to hand wind if you are wearing daily. The other issue you describe when pulling the crown wouldn’t concern me unless you notice any issues with timekeeping (or anything else out of the ordinary that would seem to be related).

I've never heard of a movement featuring an intentional "click" after each full turn of the crown. A series of clicks associated with the ratchet wheel, but not a singular click to mark each rotation.

A very small jerk to the second hand when engaging the hacking function doesn't sound alarming. And by very small I mean half a second or less.

Occasionally hand winding should not harm the movement. Particularly if you're talking less than once per week.

Should wind smoothly, with no noise, nor any hesitation or unusual resistance.

In most 9015 movements, you can sort of feel when the over-winding protection end is slipping in the barrel, there's kind of a "pulse" feeling in the crown resistance - very frequent pulse rate, approx. one pulse per every ten or so degrees of crown twist. It's not much different from the normal handwinding feel, and depending how stiff the gaskets around the crown stem are, you may or may not even feel this.

I've never, ever heard any particular "click" or anything else audible that signified a full wind. In fact... most (all) of the 9015 movements I've had never made any "clicks" from crown rotation. Pulling in/out between positions, sure. But rotating? Nope, never.

So it's not supposed to click each rotation?

Yeah never felt a once-a-rotation click. I feel the gears meshing when I wind, very distant and gentle and muted. I notice the state of wind, I can tell the mainspring tension in a gross approximate way. I've seen warnings not to make a habit of winding them up all the way (any watch), but I have NO idea how valid this is.

In a good week I can surf the mainspring tension and keep the time within a few seconds either way of the correct time. If I have a very inactive week at work I may have to top off the winding toward the end of the week, and on a day I am not wearing the watch I find the best practice is to wind it until it starts to feel less sloppy every morning. Then I can use the position of the watch to help keep it around the right time.
