Hi,

I've just been offered a 14060 non-date sub in a private sale. I've looked at it and it looks superficially okay though I'm not really an expert. I've been promised a look at box and paperwork on Friday and am hoping the seller actually does produce them.

In the meantime, one niggle I have having seen the watch is this: the dial above 6 o'clock says just 'Swiss' , but not 'swiss made' (the wording on my datejusts). Is this correct?? Are there any sub models that say just 'Swiss' on them?? Could anyone that knows please chime in with some advice so that I don't end up wasting a pile of money :-S

</B>Für Vintage-Freaks ist die "richtige" Leuchtmasse bei einer Uhr ein entscheidendes Kaufkriterium. Im Laufe der Jahre wurde von Rolex, aber auch von anderen Herstellern, verschiedene Arten von Leuchtmassen auf den Zifferblättern, den Zeigern und den Leuchtpunkten der Lünette verwendet. Wichtig für einen Sammler ist, dass die verwendete Leuchtmasse dem Baujahr der Uhr entspricht und dass, wenn möglich, noch dieselbe Leuchtmasse bei Zifferblatt, Zeigern und Lünette vorhanden ist - und das möglichst noch in der selben Farbe. Da die früher verwendete Leuchtmasse stark altert (d.h. vergilbt und bröselig wird), werden bei einer Revision bei Rolex meist die Zeiger getauscht und oft auch das Zifferblatt. Für den Werterhalt einer Vintage-Uhr ist das nicht zuträglich, für den Gebrauchswert schon. Jeder mag selber entscheiden, ob er die Uhr mit dem Vermerk "Zifferblatt, Zeiger und Lünette behalten" zu Rolex gibt oder eine komplette Revision machen lässt. Es hängt vom Gebrauch der Uhr (Einsatzuhr oder Sammlerobjekt) ab.
Bis Ende der 50iger Jahre wurde zunächst das radioaktive und selbstleuchtende Radium benutzt. Danach wurde es durch Tritium abgelöst, das schwächer Radioaktiv war. Ab 1998 wurde, unterstützt durch gesetzliche Vorschriften, das nicht mehr radioaktive Luminova eingeführt, etwas später (2000) das stärker leuchtende Superluminova.
Der Vorteil der frühen Leuchtmassen war deren Selbstleuchtfähigkeit, gepaart mit dem Nachteil, dass diese aber durch den radioaktiven Zerfall nach einigen Jahren rapide nachließ. Heute sind nur noch wenige und zeitlich spät hergestellte Uhren zu finden, die noch gering leuchten. Die meisten Uhren leuchten nicht mehr. Luminova bzw. Superluminova leuchtet immer, muss aber vor dem Leuchten durch eine Lichtquelle aufgeladen werden. Die Leuchtkraft nimmt mit der Zeit im Dunkeln stark ab.

Thanks Bob. That is terrrifically useful. I'm now suspecting the watch i've been offered is likely a fake since it is a 1999 model (with the silver surrounds around the indices) and it looks like, according to your pics, that model should say 'swiss made' and not just 'swiss' on the dial.

My Submariner was purchased at the most prestigious Rolex store in London, England, in June of 1999. It is an "A" series watch. It has "Swiss" on the dial (photograph attached - which is not the best, but does show the single word "Swiss.")

It is 100% authentic as the store in question is the Rolex Showroom on Bond Street (only sell Rolex - period), and the watch was purchased new by me in person. Also, you may be interested to know that the "silver surrounds" are in fact made of white gold, as are the hands I believe. Good luck!

The white gold surrounds will drastically reduce any corrosion. I would think the hands are chromed.

Martin and Bry -- thank you. That's really useful information for me. I'll see if the seller still has it since I had rather pulled away from the deal when i couldn't find any pictures of the 'Swiss' only model. It's reassuring to see that Martin's is the same year model as the seller's.
