Hi Folks,
I'm looking to buy my first G-Shock and am blown away by the selection.

I want something that displays my distance traveled, time, pace etc... for hiking/binking/running and was wondering what the WUS experts would recommend?

I don't want to have to pair it with my smartphone but I want a little more than just a simple step counter.

Will the GW9400 Rangeman do this or do I have to step up to the GPR-B1000?

Any replies and recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Best,
Mike

The GW9400 won't track distance or pace. Time, yes, but only via stopwatch, which doesn't sound like what you're looking for. The compass and altimeter can be used for wayfinding--basically getting you from a point A to a point B--but it can't track your absolute location or steps along the way, so it won't quite do what you want. (I wish it did! I just got back from a run with it.)

The 9400 won’t do the job you want and the B1000 needs pairing with a phone. It does indicate distances but only as the crow flies between points A and B and not the distance covered on the ground.

Thanks so much to all for the info. Unfortunately it doesn't sound like the G-Shock is in my future. Too bad because some of the ex-military guys at my range swear by them for toughness and performance.

I'm obviously a complete top end electronic watch newbie and I don't want to start any Breitling vs Rolex vs Omega type turf wars here but what do you folks think about the Garmin Instinct?

Or any other suggestions?

Thanks again,
Mike

Who says you only have to buy one watch? Right now, I'd say getting a Garmin Fenix 3(much cheaper to get a decent one on the Bay)or 5 is a completely solid choice for training. I got one for my paddleboard racing and training, and also use it for running. I still have my collection of G-Shocks, Invictas, Citizens, etc. For a while I was double wresting it, but after a while I mostly wear a regular watch most of the time, and then the Garmin for my athletic endeavors. Sometimes I still double up with the Garmin and the Rangebeast for my SUP races, since I like the accuracy of the mapping better on the Rangebeast, but I like all the stats the Garmin gives me better than anything the Rangebeast tells me. So I say get a Garmin AND a G-Shock. And if you've even been considering shelling out the dough for a Rangebeast, then I guarantee you that you can find a good Garmin/G-Shock combo that will give you everything you are looking for for the price or less.

I'll take my life in my hands and say that the Garmin Instinct seems to be a good watch. But like Indiana says what's to say that the Garmin couldn't be your sports watch only leaving lots of space for loads of lovely G's?

For the wants you listed, the Garmin Fenix is your exact match (forget the Instinct). That said, no reason why you can't buy that AND a G-Shock.... ;)

For what you're looking for, any WearOS or Tizen watch will work. I had a Galaxy S3 Frontier that did all this and more. It just needed an app download to do it.
