I have no clue when it comes to pocket watches but my young kid wants one for some reason. He wants it in gold. Lol. I told him he may have to settle for gold filled.

Anyways, I don't want to spend >$100 as I know it'll get messed up. But then again I don't want him to have a complete piece of junk either.

Any suggestions for a mechanical gold/gold filled pocket watch? Or things to look for when purchasing one? Been looking on the bay and half look like they would require a movement overhaul.

Thanks.

Hello! I suggest a Hamilton 974...it's a 16 size, 17 jewel, open-face, USA- made watch, from Lancaster, PA. Many ( most...) show up in gold-filled cases, and most will have enamel dials. Hamilton made only good watches, and the most frequently encountered Railroad Grade watch, their 992, saw fine service on USA tracks for several decades.

The 974 'should' be available for around $150. US. They are easy to work on, and will last at least one Lifetime!

And: a step up from the 974, is the 972...they are a bit more finely finished, and Adjusted through 5 positions, and also have 17 jewels. A good 992, a 21 Jewel RR Grade, tends to come in around $225.

Good hunting! Michael.
