hi folks, i have a birthday coming up in a few weeks, number 45, and am having thoughts of searching for a vintage watch from 1970, but i don't have a clue as to where to begin. i searched the forum, but didn't find anything particularly useful. i have an aversion to anything that comes from ebay (whether rational or not), so really hope there are alternatives to searching ebay that some of you might point me to. thanks!

Maybe try watchrecon and search for your birthyear? I have been wondering about this too recently. A good online resource showing manufacture dates of watches would be a good idea. Best of luck in your search.

I'd narrow it down like this: pick a brand or two, then pick a style or two, then research what was produced in 1970, in particular if there was anything significant that came out that year. If not, what significant events (other than your birth, of course :) ) occurred that year? Maybe a watch is somehow related to that event.

Omegas are popular for this, probably because they are easy to date and are a recognizable brand. Seikos are also easy to date from the case serial number. Not sure about other brands because I don't follow them, but I have to think many other brands have a cross reference between serial numbers and manufacture date.

Good luck. Finding the right watch won't be easy, but that's what makes it so nice when you find one.

Breguet Type 20 chronograph.

Just do a google search for "1970 watch." I also found this:
Omega Seamaster 60 Automatic Chronometer 1970 Watch Ref.166.06... for $ 1,333 for sale from a Trusted Seller on Chrono24

Cool idea but some significant practical concerns. The watches are likely to be small, in need of servicing if not a significant overhaul with perhaps many parts needing replacing for an expensive after purchase updating. Dials are probably getting pitted, lume has turned yellow, etc.
