I am looking to get a rubber or silicon watch band and wonder how it compares to leather with respect to durability. Which one of the two non-leather materials will survive better? Will repeated use of a tang cause faster wear than leather? Is there anything I should want at the lug end such an metal inserts or something else? Thanks.

Whilst new rubber can't touch new leather for looks the leather will tend to wear faster and need replacing well before the rubber does.

This depends on the quality of the leather ofcourse, but generally speaking your right. Degradable organic vs inorganic material.
