Hello everyone,

I recently bought the Seiko Presage SPB067J1. The seller said that the watch was new and had never been repaired. However, when I looked at the back of it, I saw some weird scratches on the ratchet wheel. I do not have any experience with this. Could anyone please tell me if it is normal or I need to have it repaired ASAP?

Thank you for your help!

From the cyclical appearing nature of the marks, I would say maybe subpar polishing of the wheel. It wouldn't bother me much unless it is not performing to specs. I have a Presage as well.

***if marks got worse, I would know that something is binding and wearing abnormally, which would cause me to be concerned.

I used an app to test its accuracy and it was fine. Those scratches does not seems to affect the watch's performance, at least for now. Since this is my first automatic watch, they really make me feel worried.

Yeah, this happens. As long as the watch is otherwise running fine, I wouldn't worry about it.

Wow, I'm going to look at MY Presage now.

No marks. But mine is a 4R series movement.

Two problems I can see is if the scratching weakened some of the teeth or it produced tiny tiny metal shavings that may eventually get into the mechanism.

The sole function of the ratchet wheel is to keep the mainspring wound. Even if it's not oil marks and slightly scratched it looks superficial and shouldn't effect accuracy or performance in any way.
It wouldn't bother me.

I hope it will be okay as well, what makes me feel concerned is that new scratches keep appearing day after day.

The seller says it is brand new, but I see new scratches keep appearing.
You mean new scratches keep appearing on the movement? That's strange. They may well be oil marks as some posters have suggested that have started to spread as you wear the watch. The 6R movement has been known to come out from the factory over oiled.

So I'm not alone 😄
Definitely not. If you Google "Seiko scratched ratchet wheel" you'll find plenty of threads about it on the 7S, 4R, and 6R. It's not limited to any of them. One of my old Seikos with a 6R21 had what looked like scratches on its ratchet wheel, but it turned out to be a ton of dirt that a watchmaker was able to clean off.

The shortest pawl lever finger (the pusher) is the only part that sits above the ratchet wheel and should be visible through a hole in the auto train wheel bridge. Does it look set onto the teeth and not under the transmission wheel. The auto wind would still work but at 1/2 pace with just the puller lever doing the work.

Its and easy job checking that all is ok by popping off the auto wind meachanism.
