Another new Prospex model being introduced for Seiko's 50th Anniversary of dive watches will be their infamous Marinemaster Tuna Can 1000m, with 8L35 movement. A first for the US market to see, the SBDX014 will have rose gold accents, a ceramic shroud and extra-strength silicone strap.

With now 50 years of experience, Seiko's dive watches have become renowned in the industry for reliability. The original Tuna Can design was created due to a letter Seiko received from a professional diver in Kure, Japan, and had met all the requirements needed to aid him in his deep dives. This design, now famous amongst watch collectors has be released in a new form for Seiko fans.

Like its predecessor from 1975, this new Prospex Marinemaster Professional will feature its dual layered case construction with titanium utilized for inner components and ceramic for its outer case making it scratch resistant and enhances shock resistance. This ceramic shroud also helps protect the bezel as well as preventing it from moving when it is not supposed to.

They implement the L-Shaped gasket to prevent helium from entering the case while diving and also add a new form of Lumibrite which has a duration up to 60% longer then previous versions. The SBDX014 also uses thick sapphire crystal with an anti-fogging/anti-reflective coating, assuring incredible legibility.

The case in full measures out 48.2mm wide and 17.4mm thick. The watch essentially wears like a tuna can on the wrist, which is where its nickname derives. The watch still wears comfortable on the wrist and has a short lug to lug length due to its virtually lug-less design.

The caliber found inside is Seiko's in-house manufactured 8L35, with a rate of 28,800 bph, 26 jewels, and over 50 hour power reserve. This mechanical self-winding movement is made at Shizukuishi watch studio in Morioka, Japan and has proven itself as a durable and reliable caliber for these professional dive watches. Recently, Seiko launched a video showing the durability of these 1000m divers, with a similar piece reaching over 3,000m depth before effecting performance. I'm starting to 'not hate' the new Tuna hands and dials. Still a step backwards, but at least it isn't the 'walk-backwards-into-an-empty-elevator-shaft' move which was my first reaction.
It's a shame only the 014 is getting an international release. The SBBN027 looks the nicest to me.

Great watch w great execution, but way too big for anything but intended function - diving\swimming. Maybe can be used in day-to-day if you have huge wrists...

While some nice pics here - the photos of MM with white dress shirt underscores lack of versatility. Forget worrying about getting it under the cuff - can you get the cuff under the watch is the question here

Looks good. It's not the diameter, but the thickness that bothers me and the reason why I sold off my Deepblue depthmaster 3000 which was about the same as this.
