Seiko quartz any good?

While looking for a quartz "every day fun" watch (i'm not going to say a beater) i stumbled on Seiko Astron series and totally fell in love with sbxd007 model.
It's fantastic. 39mm, only 12mm thick, titanium case and bracelet with special coating. 200m wr, Solar, GPS for accuracy and time zone setup, tough, looks great. I ordered it already for a very good price. But what i want to talk about is Seiko quartz technology in Astron series?

Is it any good? I know Casio is in it's own league here, following by Citizen, but i'm sure Seiko can't be that bad?

When it comes to titanium + quartz, Citizen is leader of the pack. That being said if you really like a particular watch, what difference does it make? There's Seiko quartz watches from the 70's still going strong, so it's not as if reliability is an issue.

Citizen is a bit better than Seiko but it’s not like we’re talking about the Citizen racehorse and the Seiko donkey. Both manufacturers make a very good product and you should most definitely get the one you like the look of.

Seiko Astron is better than any Citizen except Chronomaster. Casio Oceanus is comparable. In my personal ranking, Astron and Oceanus both beat any non-The Citizen. I'm talking about the watches overall.

This particular model OP has purchased is made at the Grand Seiko factory. It's honestly a Grand Seiko level case and dial with a higher end Seiko bracelet. The solar GPS movement every bit as accurate as any Eco-Drive with roughly the same expected lifespan and ability to service.

In terms of heritage, Astron was the first quartz watch and first GPS solar watch. It's a premium label for Seiko. Citizen the first titanium watch, a leader in quartz solar and adoption of scratch resistant coatings.

Here are my owned quartz examples of each

Very nice. Your SSJ005 was my second pick, but sbxd007 won me over because of material and shape. I didn't know the watch is made in GS factory. Very cool.
I intend to use this watch for many activities (heavy use) and in water so i hope i didn't ordered a watch that is too nice for that :)

I used to have this: SNDA59, Velatura DIver Chrono.

It ran on 7T92. It had the most accurate tick tock I ever saw.
The chrono seconds hand nailed every single marker, perfectly.

Nice!! Curious... how has the GPS calibration been for you? It only needs one satellite signal correct? Does it receive signals indoors?

i used to own the SSE007 (not my picture). one of the coolest watches i owned.

IMHO, some of the Seikos are nice, but they still take a back seat to Citizen and some Casio Oceanus watches.
That's a good looking Astron. Only competitor Citizen has is the Chronomaster.
Not sure if thermocompensated or any of that jazz, but every time you leave the house it sets itself to gps time, so you're never far from perfection.
personal experience, definitely not a scientifically valid sample size: I have owned several Citizen and Seiko quartz watches. I have never had a Citizen fail.

Son had a Seiko prospex solar dive watch fail; i think it was his own fault, he never wore the watch and stored it in a drawer, no exposure to light, for a couple of years.

i think you should get the watch you want. Quartz is generally highly reliable.

i think seiko quartz has no issues and is more than good enough
@Gargamel35 Where did you order it from, and what is a good price? Looks like the MSRP is $2000USD? I assume you didn't pay that much for it (I ordered a new GS diver for not much more than that).
I am going to chime in on the side of Seiko. I have Seiko quartz watches from the 1970s and 1980s and also newer solar quartz models. Each one is accurate and reliable. My current favorite is a quartz diver from the 1980s.

I also have a Citizen Promaster Tough which I like except the seconds hand never strikes the indices spot on. I have seen this on a few other Citizen quartz watches and it drives me nuts.

I would definitely take a Citizen over a Seiko.
