There's one big moment every year, at the first hour of the first day of the SIHH: the grand opening of the Roger Dubuis booth. Why an opening of a booth? Because it is, in the case of Roger Dubuis, at the image of the brand: crazy and eccentric. The 2015 version was, again, a surprise. A 7 meters high superstructure was right in the middle of the booth, something between a space ship, a spider and an octopus. Too much for the show? Probably, but Roger Dubuis is a too much of a brand in every sense!

Having firmly established itself as the pioneer of contemporary skeleton calibres and a specialist in architectural and technical mechanics, in 2015 Roger Dubuis is celebrating its 'year of the skeleton' with a brand new line of Excalibur models.

With its Technical Skeleton models, under the code name Excalibur Spider, Roger Dubuis is also skeletonising the case and even the hands and flange of these timepieces, along with a World Premiere Excalibur Spider Skeleton Flying Tourbillon with gem-set rubber bezel. On this 88-piece limited edition, the stones are set into the rubber moulding over the metal bezel, calling for perfect mastery of the exact thickness and a technique based on plastic deformation. The result is obviously interesting, disruptive, and will probably be a business hit, if not of the best taste on Earth.

Double Tourbillon Volant Squelette

On a more sporty chapter, Roger Dubuis introduces the Double Tourbillon Volant Squelette. The piece as such is not really new but now the manufacture has introduced red aluminium on the inner bezel and the crown. The case remains of a massive 47 mm.

On a more technical point of view, Roger Dubuis introduces its first Automatic Skeleton watch. The piece shows the now well-known star as bridges for the caliber, a job that required some important R&D, the star not being the natural shape of a watch movement (that had to be redesigned in consequence). What is also interesting is the micro-rotor located at 11. It's a skeleton part, which goes quite the opposite way of the traditional oscillating weight conception, designed to be as heavy as possible. However, the manufacture underlines that its power to wind the barrel is exactly the same as a traditional heavy oscillating weight - without any figures to support its speech, unfortunately.

Excalibur Brocéliande

On the ladies side, Roger Dubuis introduces a new chapter of the King Arthur story began in 2013 - remember the knights of the round table... The legend continues on the ladies side, with the Excalibur Brocéliande art piece. Ivy is its main figure, with a few colorful flowers painted above a skeleton dial and a gem-set case. This association between the technicity of a tourbillon skeleton piece and a jewelry finishing is quite surprising, actually new in the industry. The combination is interesting, but only the market will decide wether it's successful or not. A matter of taste, in the end, even if watch connoisseurs must admit that this mix of an oversized piece for women, technical, tourbillon, with a diamonds and micro flower paintings is original.
