Hi,

My dad has asked me to find out as much information as I can on his watches. This is his favourite and he really would like to know the model, year, is it collectable, is the second hand jewelled or coloured, what is it made of, anything really.

This watch seems to keep good time but I havnt dared wind it too much.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Kieran

Hi,

To answer a couple of your questions, yes Smiths are collectable and you have a nice black dial Deluxe. The movement is 27.CS and dates from the early 50's.
Here is a bit more detail on the movement inside your watch...

bidfun-db Archive: Watch Movements: Smiths 27.CS

The company achieved some fame when Sir Ed Hillary wore a Smiths on the summit of Mt Everest.

This site gives quite a bit of Smith info...

But don't think for a minute that your watch would sell for anywhere near that much. He's a specialist dealer asking high prices. Your watch has a gold plated case and stainless steel back (solid gold watches have hallmarked solid gold backs).

The red tip on the second hand is just paint.

You are right not to run it - tell him to get it serviced and put on a nice new leather strap.:-!

Hi both,

Many thanks for the information, it really is appreciated.

I think my dad thought it was probably worth about £10 so anything over that would be nice.

Not sure what his plans are for it. He did discuss getting it repaired/serviced but also about selling it and some of his other watches to get my son a nice watch as a keepsake.

Is the black dial more or less common than the while dial watches?

My son, 7, has seen the watch and loves the sparkly paint on the second hand.

It’s looking like my dad will decide to sell his watches and buy something for my son so can someone recommend where to get a decent valuation of the watch and also an estimate to clean and, if needed, repair it. If it helps, I’m near Stratford-Upon-Avon.

Very sorry, but it is against site rules to give valuations.
Here is a 1953 Smiths advert to soften that blow! :)

Hi,

No worries, I wasn't after a valuation on here just a pointer to somewhere where I could get one and also get quote for cleaning/servicing.

Best way is to do an ebay advanced search:
Advanced Search-->Smith wristwatch-->completed listings-->world wide
