Hi - I am looking to make a watch with a dial printed to my specifications, but am still casting about as I get started. I really like the Citizen solar watches and have found a source for the movement, but am curious as to how a dial works on a solar watch. It the dial transparent, or is the design printed directly on the movement surface?

Thanks!

With my older one, it looks like the indicies are applied oto a layer of glass, with the coulour underneath. With the newer one, I am not entirely sure how it is applied

I remember reading an article about eco-drive a few years ago. If I remember correctly, they melt (in-house) acrylic resin together with a proprietary blend of pigments to produce a dial that lets key wavelengths through to run the solar cell. It didn't sound like something that any of the suppliers of the hobbyist and modding communities would be able to duplicate. You might be better off developing a skeleton dial design with sections that could be open to expose the solar cell.
