Perhaps due to my major, I gradually become addicted to materials. That is why I love the watches which are made of special materials.

So far I have D-star Ceramos Quartz, Breitling Skyracer Breitlight Quartz and Omega Planet Ocean Titanium and I decide to collect more watches like that.

So I made a list to share some special materials watches. This list those watches are not extremely expensive(such as Richard Mille Carbon).
The prices are in a wide range. Not too expensive relatively or too cheap.

According to my knowledge,
1 Stainless steel is not a bad material, but also not excellent. Rolex 904L Stainless Steel is OK. But DSR7 is the best Stainless steel in the world,
However it is so unlucky to see that no factory use DSR7 as case material.

2 It is hard to distinguish TA2 Titanium and GR5 Titanium. But their properties are totally different. TA2 are easy to scratch but GR5 is not like that. However, many brands do not mention which titanium they use, which may lead confusion.

3 Ceramics are also come from different manufacturing process so their components are also not the same.

4 Silicon Nitride should be the best materials to make watches in the future.

Base on those facts, I only list some Ceramic or Titanium Alloy watches which are typical. Some watches are made of Pure Titanium(TA2 Titanium) will be
ignored. It is really soft and easy to scratch. Grade 5 Titanium are far more better.

If some watches' materials which is unsure, I will not list.

And some brands such as Hublot and Rado. Their special materials watches are so much so I only pick some of them.

Some Black Steel or XXX coated/plated are not mentioned, they may look cool, but the materials are still general.

Some watches like GRAVITY "ONLY WATCH 2015"(it is also powerlite but it is really rare) will be ignored.

Some watches who stop production will be not mentioned but some are also mentioned.

This list cannot contain all the watch brands(such as Sinn, Jeanrichard, Corum...) so it is an incompleted list.

Panerai used to have a composite material that's based on aluminum coated with some brownish ceramic like material,I know 4 watches has this material (339,375,504,505)

Recently they have carbotech which I assume is almost the same as AP's forged carbon

They also have the new something glass material in which I haven't read not had a chance to fiddle with....

Mokume Gane by H2O, a stainless steel/bronze sandwich, I believe produced in Germany.

Many watchmakers use bronze....Tudor, Helson, Zelos, Steinhart, Makara, etc.

Brass watches are made as well, but it is far inferior to bronze for watch cases. Timex used to chrome plate their brass cases before they abandoned brass for stainless steel.

Concord C1 comes in a variety of materials, including this one which is Grade 5 titanium (6Al, 4V) with a black nitride finish, with a rose-gold bezel. Pushers are ceramic.

The same watch is available in steel, with a ceramic bezel:

Or in Grade 5 titanium (no nitriding) with ceramic bezel:

1 Stainless steel is not a bad material, but also not excellent. Rolex 904L Stainless Steel is OK. But DSR7 is the best Stainless steel in the world,
However it is so unlucky to see that no factory use DSR7 as case material.
Just curious, why DSR7? There are other bearing steels which can harden into the 61-62 HRC range, that have better corrosion resistance than DSR7.
Now if you're looking purely at corrosion resistance, and not hardenability for scratch resistance, 904L and 316L would be good choices in and of themselves, which would be of more interest if you're making a watch meant for actual diving (of course, then you could start thinking about submarine steels like HY-100).

Now the various (and many different!) ceramic types out there I find very fascinating, and I'm interested in seeing what kind of uses they find for them, whether in watch cases or other situations.

This is also something I find fascinating. I had always thought for example that the caramic used in bezel inserts must be always the same type, but then I would not be able to explain the difference in costs between, say, a rolex bezel insert and a general chinese bezel insert (apart from branding of course, but I hope it's not only that!).

Anyone knowledgeable on the matter can perhaps chime in?

Breitlight is a carbon complex, but it is better than luminox carbon material
Hi,

I also own a Breitlight Colt Skyracer and I am struggling for finding information about Breitlight. Breitling provides no details about it.
How do you know that this polymer is better than Luminox carbon material? Do you have more information about Breitlight, what is this material? I read on thois forum that Breitlight might be a custom version of EMS' Grivory GVX, but I found absolutely nothing on Internet...

I have little knowledge of materials but is the DSR7 steel harder than the Ice-Hardened steel used in Damasko watches?

Damasko states that their cases are 60 HRC or 710 HV (Vickers?).

I have little knowledge of materials but is the DSR7 steel harder than the Ice-Hardened steel used in Damasko watches?

Damasko states that their cases are 60 HRC or 710 HV (Vickers?).
From what I can tell from the datasheets for DSR7 and Cronidur 30 (what is presumably used in Damasko cases, from the text of the patents they own), with proper heat treat protocols, they can both reach hardness values in the 61-62 HRC range. So in terms of hardness, it can be comparable. However, as far as I can tell, Cronidur 30 should be more corrosion resistant than DSR7.

There are a good number of steel alloys like the vanadium ones that you can get even harder (to 65 HRC and more for some), but you start losing corrosion resistance with those.

I have PAM 165 which has SS/TI parts for case and bracelet. Makes the whole 44mm watch so much lighter.

I can not get to my photos from work but this is the picture of the watch:
