So yesterday I picked up a Raketa Atom on eBay and it made me think...

Of the seemingly hundreds of designs Raketa and other Soviet watchmakers produced, only a handful seem to have been given distinct names, Atom, Copernicus, The Big Zero etc.

Whilst the Copernicus & Big Zero stand out for obvious reasons I wonder why the Atom was so significant and if there were other "All-Star" watches people would call out

Almost every single watch has a nickname. Many given by the factory workers. Do you think someone at the watch factory when talking to a colleague or a manager is going to say ‘I need parts for the watch model 213512?’ Of corse not. They give these funny nickname like ‘flat Russia’, ‘Casket’, ‘hermetic’, ‘with years’, ‘canister’, and hundreds more.

Amphibia "Мужик с пузырем" (Dude bringing a bottle with alcohol / man in a bubble - double translation possible in Russian) is one of my favorites.
