The Speedmaster Moonwatch 311.30.42.30.01.005 has a stainless steel engraved back while the 311.30.42.30.01.006 has a transparent back.

I'm interested in purchasing the 005's stainless steel back to use on my 006 instead of the transparent back.
Does anyone know if the these two Moonwatch case backs are interchangeable between the models?

Why would anyone cover this beautiful movement??? Unless you are working in a place with high magnetic fields!!!
However, if they are the same movements you should be able to swap but they might need different spacers to fit under the casebacks. It is also difficult to source these from omega as I heard. Others might be able to help you better.

Actually, they are not the same movement and making the swap isn't that easy. There was (is?) a company that made display backs that bolted right on, but I know of no back made to go the other way.

Thank you for pointing this out. The 005 is the 1861 movement and the 006 is the 1863 movement. It's interesting to note that the difference in movement would result in a difference in the dimensions and inside design of the case back.

As for the rationale to "go steel," I think I would prefer the design and inscription on the steel back more than seeing the movement.

Hope someone that has had these opened up can provide a definitive answer. The local shop where I purchased the watch doesn't know!

I can't speak for the OP but I'd guess he wanted the sapphire crystal instead of the hesalite.
