Hi, everybody. I've got a Speedmaster Reduced automatic and it started picking up over a minute a day. I took it to the local watch shop; the guy there told me the amplitude had nosedived and it's going to need a proper service. I know this Speedy is a little unusual in that I believe the movements for the stopwatch and the watch are stacked on top of one another, which is why the chrono pushers are offset from the crown. Does anyone here have a recommendation for a reliable/affordable service center I might be able to mail it to? There's an Omega shop here in Seattle and I'm sure they could send it back to Omega, but I imagine that being a terrifyingly expensive proposition.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Not sure what your budget is but I got it done via Omega and got a manufacturer warranty on it post service. I think they honor 12 or 24 months after their full service. Was about $750ish. Looks like it could go another 10 years now.

Not going to be able to contribute much by way of your OP, but the Reduced is a great piece. The movement is a 2892-A2 coupled to a Dubois Depraz 2020 chrono module, both of which are respected by watchmakers. That said, if you decide to not take it to Omega, be careful--I know that some independent watchmakers will not commonly completely service the DD module.

No idea what affordable for you really means, but Omega doesn't charge anymore to service a reduced than they do a regular chronograph. Many independent watchmakers don't service them (including me) so your options for service tend to be more limited with a modular chronograph.

Cheers, Al

The 2892 is certainly a great movement. The DD module...I don't hear "respected" as much as I hear "despised" and "avoided"....
Is the DD module itself a nightmare, or is ti just that servicing it is a nightmare? (I know that with watches, this can be a fine distinction...)

It certainly has it's quirks and faults in terms of operation...just search the forums and you will find all sorts of issues with hands moving, flopping around, etc. From a service standpoint, they are ugly.

I know people criticize the movement but I have it in two of my watches and have never had any such issues. I believe the Transocean 38 carries a similar movement.

My Speedy is ~15 years in and going strong. Averaging a service every 7-8 years once by choice and once due to negligence on my part.

Thanks for the input, everybody. I'm embarrassed I'd never heard of Nesbit's. Both Nesbit's and authorized Omega service were $750. Nesbit's turnaround is a lot faster, but being conservative, I went with Omega, in case I ever sell it... which I won't! I got such a good deal on it when I bought it (Reduceds used to be so cheap!) that karmically, popping for a full service doesn't seem unfair.

Maybe now someone can tell me why Seattle doesn't have a decent used watch store....

Unfortunately, that service is a gut punch. $750 for a watch worth maybe $2000 is just excessive for me.
If there's a "watch cost to watch service cost" ratio, then yeah, it's a bummer, the reduced is worth about half of a contemporary manual-wind Speedmaster. But I got a good enough price on it originally, and have amassed enough good memories with it since I purchased it, that I figured I'd bite the bullet. And I only had two other options, really: have a watch that picks up two minutes a day (a very speedy Speedmaster!), or sell it, with the warning that it needs a service. I generally gravitate towards automatics over manuals, and I like this watch a lot, so I spent the cash.

Well, this thread was disheartening. I love my Reduced and it's worked flawlessly for me, but the service costs gives me cause for concern.

Why is it so pricey? Isn't it a modified Valjoux movement?
