So on the way back from vacation, I bought a few magazines, namely the past two issues of both Motor Trend and Car & Driver. In all of these magazines, there were ads about Stauer watches, but I haven't been able to find any information about them except that a lot of them look gross, and all of them are under $100. I'm assuming they are Chinese made quartz, but does anyone know anything about them?

Are there a legendary watchmaker ancestor behind the "brand" like Max Stührling?
No...But I believe they searched the museums of the world and made an exact copy of the WORLD"S MOST COMPLICATED WATCH.
A watch sold for millions of dollars, yet they were able to duplicate with unerring quality for $199.00

I find Stauer offensive, purely due to their marketing "stories". As bad a Invicta and Stuhling original are due to the QC and inflated prices, at least they don't usually sink to the level of Stauer advertisements.
The funny thing is that Stauer watches are not that bad all things considered for $25 market *(at $99.99 they are overpriced). But those ads - beyond douchey. I mean every ad talks about how some valet or waiter pulls out his $49 Stauer and winks at some big-roller who pulls up in Maybach as if they belong in the same class. It's just idiocy of highest caliber and both marketers and people who buy based on those "stories" deserve to be run over by a luxry automobile, whose wearer was not paying attention due to taking a wristshot while driving to post on WUS

End rant

But first sold as a "real" Patek for $70 on Canal Street before Stauer put their "mark" on it.

The thing is that there is absolutely nothing wrong w Chinese movements (love many Seagull watches) or quartz watches (again - lots of great stuff)
But there is everything wrong with equating this
Watch Analog watch Watch accessory Fashion accessory Jewellery
Clock Metal Circle Quartz clock

to this
Pocket watch Watch Antique Fashion accessory

I mean - just check out the amazing detail on Stauer see-through case back. Exact copy of Graves, right :(

I am an avid C&D and MT reader and many times I see these ads I gag. Douchey "true story" aside, the detailing on the watch is horrendous. There is one with a gold model where a few indices look glued on by a 5 yr old (probably was). And the end link on the 6 o clock band is too small, you can see the push pin. I guess they suppose a person (sucker) who reads these mags will just buy a 99 buck watch because he's been dreaming of owning a Ferrari while reading then sees the ad and goes "I can't own a Ferrari or a Rolex but I can own a Stauer!-same thing..."

But you gotta do it smooth... Walk in casually to Patek booth, then roll-up your sleeves slowly, showing off your Stauer inspired w 1923 patent and nod at Mr Bigshot, as only the "Robin Hood of Watchmakers" can steal the spotlight from a luxury legend.

Just be sure to order your Stauer well in advance of SIHH - this summer perhaps, after-all each timepiece takes six months and over 200 individual precision parts to create the complex assembly.

And don't forget to still keep your millions in your vest pocket, while you wear a millionaire's watch.
