This Stauffer Son & Co. pocket watch movement is fairly unremarkable. I bought it because I am researching Stauffer Son & Co. and I thought it was pretty.

Here is what I think I know about it:

  • Marked Stauffer Cx De Fonds for Stauffer Son & Co. Chaux-de-Fonds
  • SS&C in a shield trademark registered by Stauffer Son & Co. in 1880
  • Cylinder escapement
  • Brass balance wheel, no temperature compensation
  • Fully bridged - no top plate.
  • Key wind and set
  • Jeweled to the third wheel with clear jewels
  • Gilded plates and bridges, blued screws - colour not very accurate in picture
Any correction, comments or additions to the foregoing gratefully received.

One thing I am puzzled by is the steel hook shaped piece that seems to be something to do with the going barrel top bearing. I have no idea what this is or does.

Although the SS&C in a shield trademark was registered by Stauffer Son & Co. in 1880 and appears on this movement, I am guessing that it is earlier than 1880 because stem winding and setting came in around 1850. I would have thought that 1880 would be rather a late date for a key wound and set movement. However, my ignorance of pocket watches is vast so I could be totally wrong on this . . .

Thanks for any corrections or input .

Regards - David

Hi Pithy,

I think it will run, the balance swings OK, but the minute hand is touching the dial so I need to fix that before I wind it. I'll let you know later.

Hi Joeuk,

Do you have a date / hallmark for your watch?

Hi Ron in PA,

It's obvious now, although it doesn't look like any click I've seen before - I'm sure you are right, thanks!

Hi Brian,

I have a Stauffer Son & Co. in my .935 Sterling 3 bears pocket watch. It is missing the little "clicker ?" arm altogether, but there are two holes where it would be attached. Would welcome any info on Stauffer that you might have. 935 Sterling 3 Bears Pocket Watch (5).JPG Micky
