I’m looking for a versatile 36 mm watch, black dial, on a bracelet. Not too casual, not too dressy. Budget is up to around 1000USD.

If money was of no concern I suppose I’d get something like an early Rolex Explorer. I even tried my luck on getting a Smiths Everest, but never managed to click through the store on time. Perhaps it’s for the best, as I can’t stop feeling it’s kind of an homage.

I also like the Sinn 556 and the Nivada Super Antarctic but those are 38mm, and I want something smaller.

Traska commuter is on my shortlist, too, but there’s no black dial option currently.

I’ve also been looking at pre owned quartz Aqua Terras, but I’m not sure if I want to pay that much for a standard quartz movement. And perhaps the watch is just a little too blingy for my taste.

So… What other watches would you recommend?

Stretch your budget. I love this thing.
Black Bay 36; very nice.

I was unconvinced on the hands/indices when I was looking at pictures of them, but I saw one in person the other day and I liked it more than I expected to.

To the OP: Have you looked at the Seiko 5 SNK line (SNK809 is black dial, I believe). Should be automatic, plain black dial, and relatively cheap.

EDIT: SNK809 has a busier dial than I remember, but Yobokies could solve that (if he's still around).

It's 34mm but with the long-ish lugs it's gonna wear more like a 36.

Christopher Ward makes the Sealander in 36mm as well.

I'm gonna go rogue and suggest a couple of watches that are a tad over 36mm but only by a little bit.

First is the Serica Field Chronometer Ref. 6190. There are three different black dials. This style of dial is named Commando.

Another suggestion is probably something you've already considered, but the Hamilton Khaki Mechanical in the 38mm case is dynamite. I love mine on a Shell Cordovan strap from Fluco.

Have a look at the Stowa Partitio. I think it's 37mm, and I think you can choose between self-winding and hand-wound movements.
