Watch Analog watch Light Blue Gesture

They're both great companies, I think we would all agree on that. But considering the price difference (with Tag being on the more expensive end), is it really worth the extra $? (This is not a discussion related to specific models but the BRAND OVERALL!)

I've had many Oris watches, but a Tag is next on my list. Which do you prefer and WHY?

That’s a tough call for me since I see these two companies are very, very differently. And I own both.

I like TAG for their entry level luxury quartz watches the best. My F1 chrono has been an awesome grab and go GADA type watch for over a decade. I think style over substance is totally ok sometimes and I find these more affordable tags to be compelling at the around $1k mark. I do also like the Monaco and the vintage Carrera a lot, but they would be pretty redundant with my speedy and I just don’t think that’s where the brand is strongest today.

on the other hand, oris is like the weird little boutique to find a super nerdy piece without spending super nerd money. 10 day pilot? Where else am I getting that? Pointer date? Equally uncommon. But I love them in this arena. The opposite of a grab and go, I like oris for their grab and stare. Or grab every once in a while when nothing else will quite do.

I guess if you told me one had to go out of business tomorrow for me as a customer I suppose I would choose Oris as I’m more likely to purchase from them again. But say what you want about TAG, as easy as it should be to pop an ETA quartz in a watch and compete with them, few truly do. They’re still the name in that segment and I like that they’re a good entry point.

My Oris Aquis small seconds is the nicest, compared to price paid, watch I have ever had. I am always impressed with it's finish whenever I wear it.

My Tag Aquaracer Pepsi GMT is a nice watch. It is solid and looks good. It just doesn't impress me as much as the Oris, especially for the money.

I know this comparison isn't between only those 2 models but in general Oris draws me in more so than any Tag does.

Oris hands down. You can argue that Oris is charging too much for Elabore grade SW200s, the answer to that is negotiate, GM, or buy them used where they all lose half their value. If Oris MSRPs are "excessive" then Tag's are ridiculous. $3,000 for solar quartz,

The 300M autos with that same Sellita are $3400. Also, FWIW, Oris never lied about a Seiko chronograph being "100% in-house." Generally Oris is pretty forthcoming about things like that, they readily admit that they designed Cal 400 for example, but they don't actually make it themselves.

Oris also never made a big marketing splash about their new revolutionary Isograph hairspring, only to then figure out that they couldn't actually make them at scale, recall all the watches that used them, and then memory hole the whole thing as if they never existed at all. You'd think that'd be the kind of thing you figure out before you launch a watch - "can we actually do this?" not after you launch a watch.

The Cal 400 Aquis is about $1800-2000 on the secondary market. Tag has absolutely no answer for that.

I like Tag better by a very small margin. There's more in their collection I'd rather own: 42mm Carrera Chronograph, 41mm Formula 1 quartz, 43mm Aquaracer 300 GMT. In the Oris catalog, there's maybe 2 watches I'd look at, the 41mm Pro Pilot Big Date and the 40mm Diver 65.

Both are great brands. TAG Heuer has more watches I like.

I've tried to like Oris but their design language just doesn't appeal to me even though they are better priced and have superior specs.

Very true.... For the price of a Quartz Aquaracer I could acquire a much nicer Aquis.

I've never handled any Tag models. I've only ever handled an Aquis and Big Crown ProPilot from Oris and I don't own either brand. As an outsider looking in, I like what Oris offers more so than Tag. Brand history/heritage notwithstanding.

Not really. I just don't think you can compare the entire brands effectively. I don't think someone in the market for a big crown pointer date, will cross shop against a carrera for example.

Maybe..... But someone trying to decide between a Big Crown Pointer Date and an Autavia sure may be torn between the two.

I won't pretend like I don't enjoy the very rare occasions when someone notices and comments on the watch I'm wearing.. In my experience, my Tag Heuers have been noticed more times than any other brand I wear, with the only exception being my Rolex's. It's not the only reason I like Tag, I think they make some really handsome watches including a couple of icons.. but the wider reach of brand recognition is nice compared to Oris, based on my own set of priorites of course.

Tag normal interchangeable bands great second market prices and fit finish is excellent. I do like oris and if this was against the 65 then it would be the 65 for sure.

Oris - much cooler brand and it's just a better looking watch. I'm not on the Tag hater bandwagon, I've owned quite a few - but Oris is the bees knees.

Before I got into watches I wore a Tag Professional quartz for 14 years daily and it was indestructible. Since then I've had several models of both and find them comparable. Both use Sellita movements in their lower auto range and you can get good deals on both if you're paying attention. The blue in the Carrera Cal 5 is one of the nicest I've worn and the bracelet is much nicer than what is on the Oris Artix line. If you like Oris you shouldn't be disappointed with Tag.
