TAG vs. ORIS

They're both great companies, I think we would all agree on that. But considering the price difference (with Tag being on the more expensive end), is it really worth the extra $? (This is not a discussion related to specific models but the BRAND OVERALL!)

I've had many Oris watches, but a Tag is next on my list. Which do you prefer and WHY?

Totally subjective.

Everyone's opinion of those two brands will vary from person to person.

The one you like best is the one to get......
I have both. Wear the Oris a lot more. The fit, finish (oh that dial!), the independence (of the company and design), the innovation, oh so much more.

Both take a HUGE hit on resale - both are great buys used.

midshipman took the words out of my mouth:
(I'll add that a TAG thin quartz watch is the perfect one watch collection for someone who doesn't want to think too much about watches).

That’s a tough call for me since I see these two companies are very, very differently. And I own both.

I like TAG for their entry level luxury quartz watches the best. ... an awesome grab and go GADA type watch for over a decade. I think style over substance is totally ok sometimes and I find these more affordable tags to be compelling at the around $1k mark.

on the other hand, oris is like the weird little boutique to find a super nerdy piece without spending super nerd money. 10 day pilot? Where else am I getting that? Pointer date? Equally uncommon. But I love them in this arena. The opposite of a grab and go, I like oris for their grab and stare. Or grab every once in a while when nothing else will quite do.

the dial on this is just gorgeous - best I've seen anywhere near this price point (or much more)

What I'll give to both brands is that they tend to release original designs and not homages. Both the aquis and aquaracer try to stand out and are absolutely not trying to be a sub like 90% of other divers out there.
Good point. My older Aquaracer is (was?) pretty unique.
To be fair though, some (not all) models of the aquaracer in the last 20 years have looked like a horrid mashup of Omega and Rolex. once I saw it, I couldn't unsee it.
There's a much wider variety in the Tag collection and they have a far more storied history with some really cool Heuer Chronos from the 60's and 70's.

But, for me Oris is better bang for your buck if you're buying a modern watch. The Aquis with Cal. 400 movement is a fantastic piece and can be picked up for crazy prices used.

Many 'storied histories' and the product of marketing meetings.

You mean successful marketing meetings as opposed to brands that have meetings and market but do not succeed?

Hmmm, like at TAG when selecting a price for the 'Tiger Woods Watch'.

I have no idea what it costs or if it's a part of Tag's success but after googling it, I have no need to ever get one. What is your point?
I'm an Aquaracer fan but I own an Aquis. Probably just by happenstance.

The only downside of the Aquis for me is the small date window. Otherwise I really like it and it gets a lot of wrist time.

I have both the bracelet and rubber strap but keep it on the rubber strap 100% of the time.

Customers will lineup to overpay, full-pop, for a piece of 'schlock', because of a name.

Oh, you mean the other luxury brands are not charging too much for their quartz watches?
TAG for me

Yup. I've noticed. Buy an Oris 400 for 4k and the second you walk away with it, it's value has depreciated to 2k.
This only matters if you buy your watches to sell them. I don't. I've never sold a single watch. Every single one of my Oris watches has felt like a steal for what I paid.

TAG = luxury brand, 😅
Having owned both, I think you get way more for your money buying Oris in terms of quality. Especially if you're considering a quartz tag vs equally priced automatic or manual wind Oris watches.

Tag definitely has way more name recognition amongst every day folks, if that's a part of your equation. But that's because everyone recognizes the big brands due to how much advertising they've historically undertaken. Few will recognize Oris, but those few that do will be people you can have a real chat about watches with.

I've kind of seen that, like a mix of a sub and aquaterra but at the same time, there is so little margin that the brands have before enthusiast like us claim they are copying something. On the flipside, if they go way over, we then say it is ugly, no one buys it, etc. They thread a very thin line.

The first statement is something that feels right, but I don't know if it's anywhere near as cut and dry as that. Quartz TAG's go for $1k-1500 all day from just about anywhere. So, about the only thing in their price range in the Oris catalog, if we also give Oris a discount, would be an entry level steel model with an SW200 in it. I'm the first person that will tell you that a BCPD is one of the best all around watches for the price on the market, I love it, but I wouldn't list "high quality" as one of the reasons. It's as basic as basic Swiss movements get, and the case is by and large just a simple field watch case. It's not BAD, it looks great, but it's hardly a departure from the type of "quality" you would get from an F1 or Aquaracer. Honestly, there probably is a lot more going on with cases, bracelets, and dials on the TAGs.
