The 2022 Watch Purchasing Abstinence Club (WPAC).

Welcome to the 2022 Watch Purchasing Abstinence Club, otherwise known as WPAC. This is the 6th year of WPAC, which was started at the beginning of 2017 to try and get myself and some other addicts out of a crazy buying/flipping cycle with watches, we were buying for the sake of it rather than for the appreciation of the watch itself, constantly chasing the next, new shiny watch or searching endlessly, fixated on some watch; generally, IMHO, a rather unhealthy behaviour.

So, what is the point of WPAC? Well, the aim is to abstain from purchasing watches. But that's a bit blunt really, the abstinence is a tool or a method to break the cycle of buying/flipping and become a discerning consumer of horology. Learning to appreciate what you have, understand what works for you with watches and think rationally about purchases, rather than emotionally. Or the ethos of less is more, as some have suggested the philosophy is here. Yes we still love watches, but as we all know we can be weak, so WPAC is a place to get help; here you can take solace from like minded people and get support and encouragement to stop impulse buying.

With those that stick around and make some commitment WPAC has been successful; for me it's certainly helped me break the buy/flip cycle and stop obsessing, so maybe it can help you.

In previous years we've had some rules, but this year there aren't going to be, there seems little point when we all have subtly (sometimes massively) different goals. If you are in serious horological trouble with buying then look back at the OP in previous WPAC threads, the rules should be a useful starting point if you want to get things under control or just shout out here to get some advice, it's what we're good at. Think of it like a clubhouse or a WUS subforum dedicated to being friendly, chatting about everything and anything and where you can find like minded watch fans.

Having said that, there is one rule I'd like everyone to adhere to; first post should be an intro with a SOTC picture (include everything, don't cheat) and some goals/aims for 2022. Whether you want to abstain completely, want to save for a special watch, just need to take control, slow things down or whatever, we'll be happy to have everyone. Just as long as you're clear on what your aims are.

Please participate in the thread, it's what makes it what it is. Any reasonable topic of conversation is acceptable and in fact welcomed.

Bashing of any potential purchases should still be a mandatory element, but let's keep it funny. Nuclear level bashing is required for any actual purchases.
Expect to be challenged by others if you're suggesting a purchase, whatever your personal goals/aims and expect to need to defend yourself.

.....and one last thing, we do occasionally get some trolls visiting, let's agree to not feed them.

Edit - clarification on enabling: this is a difficult one to deal with as WPAC has evolved such that we discuss watches, post pictures, etc., previously we tried not doing that but it didn't really work and as well despite the temptation provided by this individuals need to develop the control to not be tempted every 5 minutes by something. However, this year we seem to have a mixture of regulars and new participants, and some the latter are wanting to abstain. Hence please don't directly enable by suggesting watches......

Hello again. Haven't been active much lately and I guess that's a sign of abstinence...sort of.
It's been a miserable year mostly with my mother passing away, COVID and stuff. Been around WPAC since year one and it helped immensely put the madness on hold. Can't say I'll be participating much but we'll see.

That's the active collection and the bottom drawer are keepsakes that don't get worn, including my first watch age 3(?) and second watch age 8(?).

Regarding the main show, most have been around awhile now since I've settled down. The Sporte came in late last year and was considering flipping it but it looks like a perfect summertime watch, so I counted it in till I make up my mind. The funky orange little thing needs some restoration and I should get around to do that eventually. I included it cause I dig the dial color and the box had an empty spot so why not.

There's a couple watches that are listed for sale so I haven't included them and a couple more incoming that will be traded away as well. I've done trading for profit heavily in the past, not so much now since postal services were a nightmare. Hope this year turns out better all around.
Cheers

Thats a stunning collection of dive watches!

Condolences for your loss. Here's to a better 2022. Hopefully Covid will become more manageable (or better managed) and no canal-stuck freighters will upset the supply chain.

Today I brought home my new E36.
For the detailed bashing I did of the Explorer - as expected here in WPAC, never meant as a comment on anyone's preferences and taste, mind you... - I am happy for you in buying the Explorer. Not the choice I'd make at that price point, but it's all purely subjective, and since the Explorer is obviously your jam, congratulations!

You also don't seem to have an issue like many of us do, with too many watches and wanton buying/selling. And with a goal of one-in / one-out, no harm, no foul.

Enjoy the new watch in good health!

Very sorry to hear of your loss. 2020 was that kind of year for me, and it can take a while to bounce back.
Hope you'll be around a bit in 2022!

I just really like the Russian engineering philosophy of "If it ain't broke don't fix it. And if you need to fix it, a rock will suffice." Like, there's just something admirable about recognizing your own industrial shortcomings and then finding (relatively simple) workarounds to it.
The part of me that eventually wants to buy an old car to work on is the same part of me that is tempted by a Russian watch just for fun. On the other hand, I suppose working on a Russian watch instead of a car is ultimately a bit easier and probably more environmentally-friendly... But watches also (in spite of joking) don't respond well to being fixed with hammers. Whereas an old car could...
Enjoy a Vostok Amphibia in the abstract. In the flesh, they wear tall, definitely feel their price point (cheap), especially where the crown is concerned, and most of why they are touted so much really don't matter outside of WIS circles.

You want to see people's eyes glaze over... "Hey, that's a cool watch you got there..." Thanks, allow me to take time you will never get back in your life to tell you about how fantastic this little marvel of adaptive engineering really is, in the context of geopolitical manufacturing and trademark issues, where the USSR/CCCP was concerned, in the last millennia...

A good idea to take some time to see how it fits into your life and what might be sold once you’ve lived with it for a while.
Totally agree.

You deliberately avoided the core message of my previous post to avoid wording that disagreement.
True. I did not hold off on responding to be malicious, or because I have any disagreement at all with the principles you were communicating. I chose to not respond because your pointed feedback was predicated in part on a significant misunderstanding of my situation. I tried to point that out with my brief "need" post, and I clearly failed. Please know that your communication was top of mind as I thought about my decision and discussed it with my wife.

Peace.

Now only time will tell if it was the right choice or not. Do enjoy your Explorer in the meantime.
True! And thank you, sir.

Enjoy the new watch in good health!
Thank you.

Cheers all.

I didn't really reflect too much on the bashing, or the "I hate Rolex for reason X" posts. (BTW, I really like both mercedes AND cathedral hands, so there! LOL).
Keep in mind that the bashes are intended to help someone think through any negatives they may not have considered in the first euphoric flush of an intended purchase. I can say they've helped me think through and avoid some purchases I know I would have regretted later.

As to the "I hate Rolex..." I don't think that's avoidable. Rolex tends to provoke passionate responses in both directions. I think that's part of their marketing strategy. I don't care for most Rolexes, personally, but if I were to choose one, the Explorer would probably be it. It's an attractive watch.

Some of you will be happy for me. Some of you think I have bad taste. I think one of you believes my next stop is detox or a slippery slope to heroin, LOL. And all of that is OK. (Well, not the heroin bit. Please be assured that's not happening).
I'm happy for you. The beauty of watches is that there are so many watches for so many tastes that almost everyone can be happy. I truly believe that whatever raises the general level of happiness in the world is a good thing.

I have one watch that produced quite a bit of ... not mockery or scorn - those are too strong... incredulity? when I posted it for bashing. But I still smile when I wear it. So, don't take anything here too personally. We're just sumdoods on teh internets. ;)

We do not have to agree on everything. I love the fact that this thread has a bunch of well intended and honorable participants who actually care. Good on all of you.
I will heartily second that.

They do wear tall. And they're a bit small for my tastes, though I know not for yours. I like the crown's quirkiness. And they definitely feel cheap. I have a yellow dial one that I rather like except that the bezel is so difficult to use. It looks like one of the upgrade bezels you can get, so to date I haven't tried another one, fearing that it will feel the same.

Don't get me wrong - I love them. Two, currently, in rotation. Hard to find a cheaper way to get into modding, and that's part of the beauty of them - don't like something about one particular model? Swap things out with another, or any of a number of aftermarket sources. Of the two Vostok currently intended as keepers, neither is stock...

Honestly, I don't even think they feel cheap. Or at least not in the same way an AliX watch feels cheap. And to noobs they even look expensive (mine has been mistaken for a speedy and a rolly now 😂).

They feel vintage though, of an era long gone by, with manufacturing techniques long surpassed by modern technology - so in that sense its cheap, but with a certain nostalgia. I guess that's the charm of them.

They're bad watches by todays standards by any objective measure, yet it is the watch that ended my addiction (so far so good at least).

☝This seems to make not any logical sense whatsoever, but that's just because this is WPAC and I'm simply not mentioning all the things I love about my Komandirskie 😇

Um.. WPAC? We're supposed to be discouraging purchases here?

When people ask me about them, I say Vostok is like buying a brand new vintage watch. They are on-par with quality of watches ca. late 60s, but if you've ever handled a watch from the late 60s, you know that's not saying much...

It's just really, really hard to ignore how much of a value they represent where mechanical watches are concerned. And you even get to brag on your in-house movement...

Anyway, some fibers in my body are starting to itch for another Vostok now... Ehh, so, change of subject!

Anyone here bootstrapped their own business in the past? Because that's what I'm about to do, and I'm sh-tting my pants lol. Excited as well, don't get me wrong, but sh-tting my pants. So would love to hear how other people managed it.

First few months to a year I'll probably be living at least partly off my savings. And am now looking for renting a new home... However much financial sense it makes to stay at my parents' a little longer during this time, its just not working - so trying to find an apartment that doesn't eat through my savings too fast, yet at least has some separate space for working/sleeping, which is a challenge in the current Dutch housing market...

Cool, good luck. Do you mind sharing what business field you're going to be working in? I'm just curious.
Hopefully it can keep you rolling in cheap Vostoks happiness and contentment.

Never started or run my own business, so can't help you unfortunately. However I do wish you all the best and much success with the venture!

.....I'm presuming that you've been researching and getting as much advice as you possibly can?
Sorry to resurrect/continue the Vostok debate, but oh my dear lord they are ugly. They have faces only a mother could love and even then it'd be touch and go. OK they are cheap, but why tout that as a redeeming quality? There are lots of cheap things and usually none of them are good because they cheap. Something that has shockingly bad accuracy, rattly cheap feeling bracelets and enough sharp edges to shave with, why on earth would you buy one? Just give the money to charity and get a good feeling from that........

I started my own engineering firm in 2004 with a partner. We had one client starting out - an architect had told me he'd give me all his business if I started a firm. We were going after architects because so many engineering firms in town didn't like working with them, but I got along with them fine. We did fine - didn't get rich, but enjoyed it immensely. The 2008 financial crisis killed us along with half the civil engineering firms in town. I'm glad I did it.

How we managed - savings, lots of marketing, knowing the market we were going after. Lots of long hours - the firm policy was that if you sealed a drawing after 9 PM, you used purple ink to sign it. Lots of second hand equipment. My partner's dad put up a $50k CD as collateral for a line of credit at a local bank to help with cash flow. We managed not to max out the line of credit and got the collateral released after a year or two. I enjoyed it. I was just shy of 40 when we started. It would probably be scarier now, as I'm closer to "retirement" (if such a thing manages to happen). Our mantra was: Get. Do. Bill. Collect. The "collect" is very important, obviously.

Seems like cash in the first year or so is a big deal for people. My partner was the business half, and the collateral/line of credit thing was his idea. It made a huge difference as we got rolling.

You do lighting design, don't you? Have you been feeling out potential clients? Do you have a target market? Focusing your efforts is pretty important.
