I wonder how far out Swatch is with production of these - will orders placed during the craze result in a glut of these, as popular interest wanes.

It's always funny what the algorithm here thinks I want to see. Today I got to see people in the Doxa subforum worrying about people falsely thinking they're in the military if they wear a watch with "army" on the dial. This is why I cut off all the "made in" labels from my clothes. I don't want people falsely thinking I was made in Vietnam, although it is a beautiful country. Those people might start to falsely think that I am also beautiful, and that would be wrong.

Hey guys, so I've decided to update my intentions for this year a bit (and by extension for 2023). Just writing it down here (and will update my sig), to reinforce my intent:

First of all, I'm not buying the Botta Uno, or at least not this year or in 2023. Not because I don't like the watch, but because I have come to the conclusion there's other things in the "fun but not strictly necessary" category that cost money which are higher on my list which I'd rather spend those 500 bucks on. And so that means those other things are also better candidates than a watch for a reward for my business successes:

• I want to buy a motorcycle. I sold my old Intruder when I moved to India. But now that I'm back in the Netherlands, I'd like to buy one again. I can't afford it yet. But I have noticed that being able to afford a new motorcycle is a much better motivator for turning my business into a success, than rewarding myself with a watch. And those 500 bucks of a Botta can certainly make the difference between a bike in good or mediocre condition.
• Joining the two tattoos on my right arm into a 3/4 sleeve. Also not a cheap affair, certainly the kind of money that would buy a Botta or 2..
• Getting my ear pierced (the piercing itself won't be that expensive, but a gold earring is).

At this point I am not yet making the money that can afford all of that on a whim, and spending on watches is just going to detract from those things. So no exemption to buy a watch as a reward for my business successes this year (as was my original intent), and probably not for 2023 either.

I have the feeling that some folks here have interpreted my comment to mean I have a tattoo of a watch. As I said, I have a tattoo where my watch would go. On the back side of my wrist it's just these two lines, but they make a design under the wrist.

You‘re on a path many of us have traveled. Seven years ago I started researching an anticipated purchase of an analog G-Shock. I stumbled across watchuseek and got sidetracked by the idea of a purely mechanical watch. I bought a Seiko Monster mostly out of curiosity and became quickly hooked. I bought eight watches that year, eleven the next, and twenty (!) the year after that. My collection had grown to over thirty watches and I knew that this wasn’t normal behavior. I joined WPAC and have significantly curtailed my impulse spending habits. I still think about watches a lot and enjoy the company of the members in this thread, but I no longer think that I have to Buy All The Watches.

What advice can we give? You’re just starting out so curiosity is a strong motivator. I would say that asking yourself really tough questions such as:

Will I really wear this watch I want to buy? What will it replace? What function will it serve? Will the watch make me truly happy? Am I buying because I’m sad/depressed/bored/drunk? Am I buying for the dopamine hit?

We encourage careful contemplation and consideration before making a decision. Think long and hard before pushing that Buy button. Also, if one comes in, what are you going to sell or give away to prevent your collection from getting out of control like mine did?

Let us know what you’re thinking. Many of us have had the same thoughts, same desires, and same stories to tell.

I should charge royalties for the right to use my charts. You know what it costs to create original charts? It's not free.

Well...it is, actually, but still...that's my work product there.

On a personal note (and in keeping with the theme of the thread), I think my collection has been "complete" for at least a year, notwithstanding the recent unplanned addition of two pieces.

One was a photo sample of the NTH Mack, kept for sentimental reasons (it was named for a deceased friend). The other was a return of one of the NTH x Watch Gecko Subs, from a customer who'd already worn it, preventing us from returning it to sell-able inventory. I don't know if I'll keep it, but for now, I've been wearing it.

The collection stands at 18 pieces. I'll probably let 2-4 go within a year or two, but I'm in no rush. I feel like I've got all the variety I need, and don't feel like there's anything else I want. I suppose I've reached that final, one-in-one out stage.

It's against my business interests to encourage, or even condone thoughtful contemplation before making a purchase. Just the same, I agree with the advice above. Nothing wrong with a little deliberation and moderation (which I prefer to the more monk-like abstinence).

That chart was born from my observation of many WIS, especially those who go a bit crazy in the early stages of their collecting. More than once, I've wondered if someone wasn't in danger of falling out with his wife over his watch-spending. Some folks don't seem capable of self control, sadly.

If it helps, there's a methodology for decision-making I try to consistently employ in my business dealings. It's quite simple - when faced with a choice to make, if my initial reaction isn't an instant and emphatic, "hell yes!", it's a "no".

Feel free to use it when considering your next watch purchase.

You know how everyone around WUS complains about having slim wrists? Well mine are one meter around, but my arms are only 5 cm long. So that tattoo is a half sleeve. Weird, huh?

I'm sorry, guys. In spite of your bashing I got this one. Sold a watch last month, so one out, one in, but still. In my vow I intended to buy one watch this year, but I bought two and sold one.

However, I like this very much. The craftsmanship is well above the price point. Love to have the features and solar/atomic convenience of a G-Shock in a beautiful, authentic dive watch package. Swapped the factory strap to a Borealis dive strap and now wears even more comfortably.

This little watch obsession has put a hold on my 1 tattoo / yr tradition, started when I turned 37. So I'm a few behind at the moment, and yes, saving to spend on a tattoo means curtailing watch spending... which I have been loath* to do.

*There is actually a difference between loathe and loath, beyond different forms of spelling the same word, perhaps based on dialect or geography. Go figure. I learned something today.
