That you know of...
..., and let this be a lesson to us all. On that fateful Christmas Eve, while most of Marquette's innocent citizens were snug in their beds, a horrifying truth was revealed. The Ore Dock was nothing of the sort! In fact, it was the secret submarine pen lair of Captain @Hotblack Desiato ! Lake Superior's maritime economy would never be the same again...

More cabernet, anyone?

Merry Christmas to all. Thought I'd write a couple of lines to sign off for the year. Haven't followed the thread much tbh. Things move really fast and I've been following events in Ukraine more closely on Twitter and Telegram. There's only so much spare time.

Overall it's been an okay year for me following a very disappointing 2021 on every level. Horologically speaking I haven't followed the forums all that much and that's for the best I guess. Did a bit of straight up trading, selling nine watches for a profit of about 2K $. I'm mostly into the buy/fix/resell mindset with the profits ending up financing other stuff or thrown back into the game. Have a couple of watches listed and a couple more scheduled to be listed soon. For the time being this is something I enjoy doing, hunting down a piece for a potential trade and refurbishing it (not to mention the extra $$ isn't bad at all.)

I'm starting to see some disposable funds becoming available. Citizen's new barnacle diver reissue has been a temptation of sorts but I'm not too sold on them using titanium instead of steel (a first for me). I own the original item and the weight feels right. But since it's not a limited issue there's no pressure to buy. Grand Seiko now has an official AD here in Greece and all of a sudden everyone seems to be buying one (or more) on the local forums. Not too keen to splurge that sort of $$ though on a single watch unless I sell some pieces first. But you know how fads come and go, that's all the rage now here

I'll gather the boys for a sotc shot for the next wpac, come next year. Cheers!

It’s not even 2023 yet. I am vowing to cut my watch spending and flipping down this year. It’s just too expensive. That said this beauty is calling my name:

Help me out please.

Seiko seem to have taken a leaf out of Omega's moonwatch playbook; e.g. slap a new dial on and call it yet another limited edition. Only Seiko like calling it a "save the Ocean". Usually the "save the ocean" versions don't look better than the standard versions, this one is no exception. That dial will blind you in daylight with the reflections.....
....on top of that the side profile isn't exactly elegant is it.

Go back to WPAC 101. Look at your collection and try and appreciate what you have.

You can post that in the New Seikos thread and get plenty of people triggered by its 6R movement but if you are asking for a proper WPAC end-of-the-year bash, I'm game...
  1. Does it have a nickname yet? How about Grey Blob?
  2. The White Birch called and wants its favorite shirt back.
  3. I do not know if blending into the sidewalk counts as tacticool. Save the Ocean? Looks like Seiko wants to pave the ocean.
  4. I hate to break it to you but the ocean is already fuct.
(I am a little out of practice. I need to sharpen up for WPAC 2023.)

Saw it in the flesh, its very nice but it should probably be called discus burger. Also, Seiko with a 6R? The only one I had running well is now running like ****e after five years of very low intensity use. No way Jose.

Still has the same ridiculous date window. I like that the date is oriented upright, I like that it doesn't cut into an index, but it just makes the dial too busy and full. This is one case where the date would have been better off at 3 o'clock. Seiko makes some great textured dials, but textured dials on divers always seemed silly to me. Okay, I know no one uses them to dive anymore. Or even beats them up as sports watches. But still, textured dials on sports watches seem like lipstick on a pig to me. Keep the texture on dress watches that need something like that to stand out. Neo-retro models have become so prevalent as to be bland and boring to me anymore. The watch industry could not say any clearer that they have run out of design ideas. The Prospex logo is another unnecessary touch. In another decade Seiko might well be competing with Rolex for sheer dial text. The image with the watch on the strap (and to be fair, that is a pretty nice strap) just makes the whole thing look grey and dull.

These "benefit" limited editions always make me ask: What exactly is the company doing to benefit (in this case) the ocean? Okay, they have a recycled bottle strap, but what else are they doing? How much money is going to "save the ocean"? What are they doing to "save the ocean"? And, perhaps taking it a step further, how does creating a product like this with all the waste and emissions and probably damaging oceanic shipping actually do anything to help save the ocean? Making things has the side effect of pollution. Guarantee you parts of this watch were shipped over the ocean, which is still a very dirty process.

I agree on the dubious benefits (or greenwashing....) that these limited editions give. Considering the manufacturing environmental costs I'd be surprised if it actually had any net positive results.

...and slap a price premium on it for good measure. USD200 over the base model doesn't seem like much but for that crumpled-paper-looking dial it's... well... questionable value.
