The 2022 Watch Purchasing Abstinence Club (WPAC).

Welcome to the 2022 Watch Purchasing Abstinence Club, otherwise known as WPAC. This is the 6th year of WPAC, which was started at the beginning of 2017 to try and get myself and some other addicts out of a crazy buying/flipping cycle with watches, we were buying for the sake of it rather than for the appreciation of the watch itself, constantly chasing the next, new shiny watch or searching endlessly, fixated on some watch; generally, IMHO, a rather unhealthy behaviour.

So, what is the point of WPAC? Well, the aim is to abstain from purchasing watches. But that's a bit blunt really, the abstinence is a tool or a method to break the cycle of buying/flipping and become a discerning consumer of horology. Learning to appreciate what you have, understand what works for you with watches and think rationally about purchases, rather than emotionally. Or the ethos of less is more, as some have suggested the philosophy is here. Yes we still love watches, but as we all know we can be weak, so WPAC is a place to get help; here you can take solace from like minded people and get support and encouragement to stop impulse buying.

With those that stick around and make some commitment WPAC has been successful; for me it's certainly helped me break the buy/flip cycle and stop obsessing, so maybe it can help you.

In previous years we've had some rules, but this year there aren't going to be, there seems little point when we all have subtly (sometimes massively) different goals. If you are in serious horological trouble with buying then look back at the OP in previous WPAC threads, the rules should be a useful starting point if you want to get things under control or just shout out here to get some advice, it's what we're good at. Think of it like a clubhouse or a WUS subforum dedicated to being friendly, chatting about everything and anything and where you can find like minded watch fans.

Having said that, there is one rule I'd like everyone to adhere to; first post should be an intro with a SOTC picture (include everything, don't cheat) and some goals/aims for 2022. Whether you want to abstain completely, want to save for a special watch, just need to take control, slow things down or whatever, we'll be happy to have everyone. Just as long as you're clear on what your aims are.

Please participate in the thread, it's what makes it what it is. Any reasonable topic of conversation is acceptable and in fact welcomed.

Bashing of any potential purchases should still be a mandatory element, but let's keep it funny. Nuclear level bashing is required for any actual purchases.
Expect to be challenged by others if you're suggesting a purchase, whatever your personal goals/aims and expect to need to defend yourself.

.....and one last thing, we do occasionally get some trolls visiting, let's agree to not feed them.

Edit - clarification on enabling: this is a difficult one to deal with as WPAC has evolved such that we discuss watches, post pictures, etc., previously we tried not doing that but it didn't really work and as well despite the temptation provided by this individuals need to develop the control to not be tempted every 5 minutes by something. However, this year we seem to have a mixture of regulars and new participants, and some the latter are wanting to abstain. Hence please don't directly enable by suggesting watches......

It does appear much harder for Europeans to sell watches. I don't know why, in theory the marketplace in Europe is bigger. Lack of common language, not as consumerist, historical brand preferences; all have something to do with it but don't explain anything like the whole of it.

I was looking at a watch from a dealer in Germany on chrono24.co.uk and in the detail it said that they only sell to the EU. So given that they were posting on the specifically UK version of the site, what did this mean? That they didn't realise the UK was no longer in the EU? That they did realise and this was a way of expressing their resentment at us leaving? That anyone could buy from them but they couldn't be bothered to remove the VAT for nonEU purchases?

It's all too complicated to bother with.
You're probably right about the reasons, also I wondered about using Reddit, as it seems popular, but I can't be bothered "learning" a new format and building up a reputation. Just gotta learn that when I buy it should be a keeper if I want to avoid the hassle of selling...........

I'm with you, Hornet -- I purchased a watch earlier this year via reddit and I found it to be a non-intuitive and confusing system for what should be straight-forward things like contacting the seller and registering feedback. But it seems to be the trend for watch sales as more and more transactions are being conducted there. With eBay's growing fees and Watchuseek's stuffy reputation, the Cool Kids are migrating to the latest on-line platform and that appears to be reddit.

Just reading the sales listings on reddit give me a headache, but it feels like if you want to sell you should maximise your exposure.......

Here is my SOTC at the moment. Just a quick and dirty cell phone snap.

I bought two watches in 2021 -- the Bulova Precisionist and the Great White STO Seiko. But I also sold two watches - a G-Shock Rangeman and a rare Seiko Sawtooth. So, two in, two out. Not bad...

My goal is to get a Tudor BB58 at some point this year -- and that's it. I have zero plans to buy anything else. This is every single watch I own, including the beater that is only used for yard work and timing sets at the gym.

Once I get the Tudor -- if I buy it at all -- I MIGHT sell the gilt Seiko Turtle. They will be quite similar in color scheme and they are both divers. I would expect to wear the Tudor 95% of the time, so not sure it would make sense to have the Turtle collecting dust in the watch box. That would be one in / one out.

I could also see myself eventually selling the Bulova. I like it, but if I want to wear a dress watch, I usually wear the Omega. And if I want a blue dial watch for the day, I'll be reaching for my new Great White Seiko -- the blue dial is incredible and I like it way more than the blue of the Bulova. I really just wanted to own a Precisionist since I missed out buying one back when they were cheap as chips and all over the place. I think the movement is really cool and unique, but I'm not sure that alone makes it worth having if I'm not going to wear it. This particular Bulova is also just a tad too big for the style -- it would look so much better if it were 39 mm. I really wanted a Surveyor, but I could never find one at a reasonable price, so I settled...

Anyway, I think that's it. I've also thought about selling the Orange Monster, but it was a gift from my wife and with these being discontinued and going up in price, I think I'd rather keep it. It would be hard to replace if I regret selling. It doesn't get worn much since orange doesn't really go with what I wear very often, but I guess that's OK.

Right, from latin then.
I thought PIE indicated Proto Indo European?
English is a silly language with too many roots... So you get things like unicorn where onehorn would make much more sense (like in the much more sensible Germanic languages 😅, eenhoorn in dutch)

4 more chosen to go up 4 sale...

Techniques:
-
No watch is perfect. For a long time I bought watches if there things I liked about a watch. Now, I look carefully at specs and pix, to really figure out what I don't like about a watch. And then figure out if I can live with it.

- Buy something else, preferably something which retains value, or even appreciates. Precious metals - silver bullion and junk coins can be purchased down into the 10s of dollars. Or create a dedicated savings account / jar, for money you did not spend.on a given watch.

I empathize, there were times when I thought about parting with my Oris Artelier Skeleton, and it was a gift from my lovely wife. Why? Well, it is gorgeous, but I rarely need a dress watch and it is not the most readable... And then, I reminded myself that she bought it for me as a gift because she wanted to support my passion, even though she doesn't fully understand it. So, I tried (and succeeded) to reframe how I thought about it. Dollar value doesn't enter into it for me. It's part my my small collection, true. But it's really a token of my relationship with her, for which I'm very thankful. So, my advice is that the Orange Monster might be the last one you would ever want to part with! ;)

Cheers!

2021 was the year I went totally out of control. Part of the problem is that I'm on a medication that causes obsessive shopping. (Seriously. It's a thing.) I've already culled about a dozen (three of them from the AliExpress 11/11 sale) that I'll be selling as soon as I figure out the camera on my fancy new Galaxy Flip3. The photos aren't great, but this should give you an idea of where I'm at. Everything is mechanical.

First, the biggie: pilot, field, and diver watches. IDs under the photo.
Drawer Ingredient Cuisine Rectangle Gas

On the left, pilots and fields, starting with top row:
  • Seiko SNK805
  • Escapement Time Flieger B
  • Homemade Flieger B with a 6497
  • Glycine Combat 7
  • Orient titanium
  • Bulova A-15
  • Glycine from the 1940s
  • Timex Mk1 Mechanical
  • Bulova Hack
  • Hamilton Field Mechanical
On the right, divers:
  • Heimdallr 62MAS
  • Heimdallr MM300
  • Heimdallr Tuna
  • Heimdallr Bronze Turtle
  • Zelos Swordfish 40
  • Zelos Hammerhead
  • Aquatico Sea Star
  • Aquatico Sea Star Bronze
  • Orient Mako USA II (with aftermarket bezel and insert)
  • Orient Mako XL
  • Seiko Black Monster (first generation)
  • Deep Blue Daynight 41 Tritdiver
Next, the rest of the store-bought watches:
Watch Light Black Shelf Automotive lighting

  • Onsa auto from the '40s or '50s
  • Glycine Combat 7
  • Another Glycine Combat 7
  • Sturmanskie Sputnik
  • Aquatico Bronze Blue Angels
  • Chrono labeled with The Brand Who Name Shall Not Be Spoken, with said name blurred out, from before the Name Could Not Be Spoken.
  • Alpha (Swiss Alpha, not Chinese Alpha)
  • Shanghai
  • Glycine Combat 6 Moonphase
  • Orient commemorating the birthday of some Thai princess
  • Adee Kaye, my first mechanical after I got into this godforsaken hobby
  • Vostok Europe Metro
This was also the year I got into building watches. As with everything else, I went overboard. Everything with Seiko movements. First, the non-divers:
Watch White Automotive lighting Flash photography Clock

  • Franken with a very old dial
  • Tintin
  • Artificially patinaed dial
  • Fish
  • Great Wave off Kanagawa 1
  • Great Wave off Kanagawa 2
Finally, homemade divers:

  • 55 Fathoms Samurai
  • Great Wave off Kanagawa Samurai
  • Starry Night SKX
  • Starry Night Tuna
  • Moon dial
  • Meteorite dial
  • Broken Bronze
I'll continue building this year, but truly hope to keep the buying to a minimum. That said, I still have three watches somewhere between here and China.

I will NOT be abstinent this year. But I'll lurk in this thread to keep from being too slutty. 😁

It really is interesting to see others' collections and hear their thought processes. Carry on, I'll be quiet.

My dilemma with my Gen 2 Orange Monster as well. I don't ever wear it but it was the first automatic watch I bought when I first started this journey seven years ago. It has more sentimental value as a milestone than anything else. Logically, I should just sell the thing and move on, but every time I consider doing so, a little voice in my head says don't do it. So it sits around as a reminder of a more innocent time.

In my defense, got this one for a review.

Revamped Darwil brand, 1 of 100 Special Agent Automatic bronzo.

Swiss made, totally retro styled. My favorite vintage brand, owned over 100 of these oldies including orginal one from 70ies.

See the real trouble is I enjoy watches. I looked hard at a Seiko SNZG07. I am eternally tempted by Lilienthal watches, and so on. I won't get either of these, but I easily could.

The watches in my "for sale" section are not really offensive. I've just never bothered wearing them, and I would like to think they are easier to sell as a result. Doesn't seem to quite work though.

I realized I had more watches then slots, and in two places I had removed the pillow and placed two laying sideways in the spot. I'm such a sucker for inexpensive watches. I own five Eco Drives, five Pagani Design(don't judge me!) And three Glycine.

At the beginning of the Covid pandemic, I had four watches. I've bought more than twenty since.

A few I genuinely want to sell. The Aragon, that Seiko Recraft, an eco drive or two. I'm not sure what I want a perfect collection to be yet but I know... This isn't it.

Help me guys. There isn't another watch I'm a tuqlly pining for right now which is good.
