Welcome to the 2023 Watch Purchasing Abstinence Club, otherwise known as WPAC. This is the 7th year of WPAC, which gives me pause to stop and think that I'm surprised it has lasted this long. We might just be onto a good thing?

I'm not intending to repeat the usual opening remarks, but if you're coming to this thread wondering what this is all about have a gander at the last couple of years WPAC threads:

.....obviously don't read them all, but the original, opening posts should give you a good idea. In short this is a thread for a like minded group of watch obsessed individuals who are generally trying to improve their watch buying habits. Anyone is welcome to join, but if you join we want participation and contribution!

In previous years we've had some rules, but this year there aren't going to be, there seems little point when we all have subtly (sometimes massively) different goals. If you are in serious horological trouble with buying then look back at the OP in previous WPAC threads, the rules should be a useful starting point if you want to get things under control or just shout out here to get some advice, it's what we're good at. Think of it like a clubhouse or a WUS subforum dedicated to being friendly, chatting about everything and anything and where you can find like minded watch fans.

Having said that, there is one rule I'd like everyone to adhere to; first post should be an intro with a SOTC picture (include everything, don't cheat) and some goals/aims for 2023. Whether you want to abstain completely, want to save for a special watch, just need to take control, slow things down or whatever, we'll be happy to have everyone. Just as long as you're clear on what your aims are.

Please participate in the thread, it's what makes it what it is. Any reasonable topic of conversation is acceptable and in fact welcomed.

Bashing of any potential purchases should still be a mandatory element, but let's keep it funny. Nuclear level bashing is required for any actual purchases.
Expect to be challenged by others if you're suggesting a purchase, whatever your personal goals/aims and expect to need to defend yourself.....

.....and with that I declare WPAC 2023 open for business. Yes, it's a little premature but I reckon I'll be quite busy after Xmas and between NY, so a little forward planning is required.

We must suspect everyone comrade hard love......
I'm sure you are Number 2, but who is Number 1?
It was like 75% off retail.
So?

I don't need tampons. I won't suddenly buy tampons when they're 75% off...

You don't need another watch; you even stated you want to retire with no watches. What do you care if there's a seiko at 75% off... (why are you even looking!)

Of course it was... Because it's PURPLE.
Good luck selling that one in a month.
Lucky it was purple, and not violent.
Incidentally, there was a very attractive ring, eternity style, in a local jewellers Christmas/New Year sale, that I considered for my wife. It was over £2000, but 70% off. We didn't go and have a look, unfortunately, and it's sold now. I'm sort of half kicking myself. It would have been buying the deal, but it seemed some deal. She wasn't over bothered about missing out. :D

I totally would have bought a purple Seiko 5 ...as long as it was an older 7s model. The purple Zelos Aurora was very tempting, as were some of the purple dial Tsao recent releases.

But I don't need another watch. Sold a Van Banner VBAO in purple, which I kind of regret. But collecting "all the colors of the rainbow" dials is just another way to justify Too Many Watches.

I really should like Oris Big Crown Pointer Date watches, Especially the 38mm ones which just came out. Same thing with the 38mm Hamilton Murph - on paper, near perfect watch for mconlonx. Reality... meh, doesn't grab me like it should. Even in person, it's a great looking watch; I'm over my "no fauxtina" and "date-only" phases.

But still... I got my top of the heap watch in that style, a Sinn 656. I seem to be more a "some arabic indexes" kinda person, rather than an "all arabic indexes" which actually surprises me to find out.

I think this is still in the spirit of WPAC as it concerns budget control and avoiding flipping...

I'd be interested to hear how you approach (relative to your own financial means) your personal limits on what is acceptable / prudent to spend on a watch?

Advice is often given (and I think I agree) that if your heart is set on watch A, then buying cheaper watch B (which is a bit similar but not as nice), in an attempt to scratch the itch, is a futile pursuit.

But if watch A is a Vacheron Constantin 222, then a lot of people (myself included) will need to accept that it won't ever happen and might choose to look for a watch that shares some characteristics but at a much lower price-point.

I was thinking one approach is to choose watches that are in your budget but have a design integrity or enough unique attributes that they don't feel like lesser versions of something else. G-shocks are good for this as they could be argued to be the best or most desirable of their genre. But steel sports watches? Pilot's watches? I think it's harder.
I'm someone who started in affordables, went up to luxury and then have come back down again.

I had a Tudor bb58 and an omega 2254.

Going up in price was a by product of spending so much time looking at watch content and becoming enamored with those brands.

I realized that I didn't value the brand as much and just enjoy nice quality jewelry on my wrist, which you can get excellent quality for 1/10th the price.

I also felt I could use those funds for something better at that time.

I could see myself moving back up the ladder at a later time but right now I'm content with more affordable pieces.

You are being silly now.

We needed some new lights for the house, and we bought some in the Christmas sale at 40% off. They are fine lights. Maybe if we had paid more we would have got something even nicer. Maybe we could have waited and got something for a little less. We were happy with what we bought.

Occasionally I see jewellery my wife might like, and this ring was one such piece. We just talked it over and decided not to bother. It was Christmas, it's her birthday in February, but there's always some celebration on the way.

I don't need to buy sanitary supplies, though, although we buy other bathroom essentials. 75% off on toilet roll would be well received.

Occasionally supermarkets in the UK have coffee on offer. A 200gm jar of decent coffee is about £7.00 in the UK now. You used to see it at £4.00. now the best deal you see is more like £5.00, but when it's £5.00 I'll buy an extra couple of jars. There's quite a few store cupboard luxuries that work like that. I don't see the point in paying top dollar at the jeweller/supermarket/AD if I don't have to.

Etcetera etcetera, as King Mongkut was wont to say.

I imagine it can quickly become a slippery slope (slippery ladder?). A hierarchy of brands and models to work your way up through... People don't tend to aspire to the bottom rung of a ladder.

Somewhat counter-intuitively, I actually find going and handling the watches in person to be quite helpful. It's easy to get carried away online, reading reviews and brand history. You're consuming all that nebulous 'brand value' which has such a high actual cost in the world of watches.

I went in to the city recently and discovered Breitling and Omega had both opened new concessions in the shopping centre. Handling all these 40mm bits of metal, and realising they cost the same or more then the new motorbike I travelled in on, was a good reality check.

I was joking obviously :p

But the point was not "buying something you need at discount", that's just the smart thing to do. The point was "buying something you don't need, because discount"... now that is silly.

I see, said the blind man.
Well why do I get hauled off to the gulag for buying a watch I really need?

I don't buy anything I don't really need. What never? No never. What never? Well, hardly ever. Then Give 3 cheers and 1 cheer more for the prudent captain of the pinafore. :D
