I'm pretty sure @Hornet99 has gone to a circle of hell reserved for those who espouse "do as I say", rather than "do as I do". I thought he had just declared that his job was at an end, but others are saying he bought a watch.

The worst thing really is that WPAC rules apply equally to a £60 trinket from the House of Pagani to a £10000 waste of money on expensive ateliers. The first is pocket change. There should be a minimum cost for bashing (note that my opinions are often discredited)
Guidelines really rather than rules. Everyone takes something different from wpac- my goal was never total abstinence for example but just to curtail those frivolous purchases that weren’t at least well thought out and considered: your goals may be different and hornets different still. One thing is constant - we are all here because we felt we were spending too much time, money or both on watches.

I didn't mean to be harsh, so I'm sorry if it came over that way. I just enjoy this never ending thread, which is more like a café in itself. Personally I can genuinely say I had no real goals, as I already had few intentions to buy. Nevertheless being around has reinforced those intentions and maybe stopped me buying an inexpensive watch or two.

I was just surprised when hornet said he was leaving and even more surprised when others said he had bought a watch.

Understand that. Hornets journey mirrors some others including myself where a break from wus completely was the answer. I think I didn’t post on wus for 12 months till last week. But the cafe is always open

Not sure he actually bought something after he left. But him selling the Helson does beg that question...

In any case, those who have been around for some time here know that Hornet wasn't holier than any of us when it comes to buying watches. And he's taken a few months break before. So honestly no surprises there for me. He wouldn't be the first also; I've taken my share of breaks, and there's some who left to never return also. Putting a bit of distance between yourself and the madness of this forum can go a long way in regaining a healthy perspective on the hobby ;)

It's more about seeking a peaceful retreat from the treadmill fueled by the confluence of consumerism and marketing that speeds our souls into discontent and disarray. We gain more by learning to value relationships and experience rather than seeking to fill the voids in our spirits with the dopamine hits of "Add to cart."

You are way too eloquent, not nearly provocative and cynical enough... I'm missing the tough hard love here 😜

It is not our souls that go into "disarray". It's this world that's going to sh¡t because of western consumerism driven by the ludicrous idea of endless economic growth. Watch hoarding is a perfect example of the ways people are driven to excess, by marketing machines that exploit every human weakness you can think of.

But yeah, look inwards as well, and wonder why you buy into that mindset of stuff over relationships. Okay maybe our souls do shrivel by the poison of consumerism as well...

Old house - needed done. Been putting it off for years so it was overdue: painful but essential.sadly/
Our house is probably young compared to yours - it turned 101 years old this year. We're doing the upgrades piece meal. During our last room remodel, we found the old gas lines for the gaslighting.

My wife does say I tend to understate things... except when we argue.

Damn ebay suggestions.
(After buying the replacement crystal for my oldest watch.)
Bought a watch. Should not have.
(At least it was $50 and not $350.)

I'll see myself to the dungeon.
More often than not impulsive purchases like that one can be completely avoid with the simple action of posting it here for a bash, and waiting 24h for the answers.

What's the thing that's worth going to the gulag for? Maybe share a pic?

True. I definitely " bought the deal".
JDM Casio, not available in the states.
Watch Analog watch Product Silver Clock

No "imaginary need" for it, just liked the look.

Three out, and one in for the year, and +$250 in hand.
( Not counting the one rescued from the wife's donate pile.)

It's unfortunate for you that your time in the dungeon won't go faster with a racing stripe on the dial...

I did not sell any watches in 2022 but it seems now I am once again in selling mode. Also I discovered trading this year and have made two trades that I am happy with. Traded my Omega quartz for a Damasko DS30 and a Longines Spirit in a good one for two deal. Did not bond with the Longines as a fancy field watch. I have many true field watches but did not have a mechanical dive watch. So then I traded the Longines Spirit for a Seiko Luxe SPB351 which I am looking forward to very much. 6R35 and all Titanium with a cool light blue dial. Now the work of putting all the boxes together with the watches for sale about 15 or so left to get ready to go.

Will be interesting to hear if having the Day / Date at a jaunty angle makes it more or less legible when one is chained to a wall.
That depends on if you are the weird type who wears their watch on the inside of the wrist :p

[edit] or actually, thinking about it a bit more, I don't think that makes a difference for the orientation of the date lol. If you wear it left or right wrist is the differentiating factor :p [/edit]

One of the weirdest quirks of WUS is the sheer obsession with James Bond.

Don't get me wrong, I love Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig as actors but I like them more as actors in films other than Bond films. The other Bonds I'm just kind of lukewarm about. But I see so many threads about wearing X watch with Y clothing, and the longer the thread continues the greater the chance of someone pointing to one of the Bonds (never Lazenby, oddly) wearing X watch with Y clothing. Most often, a diver with a suit. And I just... don't care how Bond dresses? I'm neither British nor a secret agent. I also don't have a literal team of stylists making sure that everything I wear looks great.

The obsession with wearing X watch with Y should be enough of a clue that all these watches are just fashion watches. Regardless of whatever arbitrary distinctions we make in our minds, or whatever arbitrary fashion rules some long-dead Victorian busybody made up during a long northern European winter because they ran out of opium and sex wasn't supposed to feel good.

Fueled by Omega's marketing, no doubt. Is there any other watch manufacturer who markets as aggressively their watches though product placement on fictional characters in film? Hamilton, maybe?

I was watching Daniel Craig in the recent Glass Onion film and it featured a three-second close up of his platinum Omega Seamaster 1948. Being a watch nerd I was prompted to go to Omega's website to learn more about the watch, but only for curiosity. The $44,000 price tag just made me laugh, but other than its cameo in the film, I had never heard of the watch at all.

I agree, the obsession with James Bond's attire is curious, but watch enthusiasts are capable of some rather silly thinking.

Prominent marketing, no doubt. Similarly, you can't imagine a Tag Heuer Monaco without Steve McQueen or a Seiko Arnie without... well, Arnie.

Good news, it passes. After getting the PO I often imagined myself as James Bond whenever I had to put on a suit, but then it got old after a few occassions. Last time I didn't think about Bond at all. It kind of helped that I wore the suit and watch to a funeral...

a Tag Heuer Monaco without Steve McQueen
I’ve always found that association a bit perplexing as McQueen only wore the Heuer as a movie prop and was a dedicated Rolex wearer in real life. In my association with auto racing in the early 2000s, I never ever saw a Monaco on anyone’s wrist, but that’s probably because amateur racers are usually broke because all their money goes into the car and the fearsome costs associated with the sport.
