Having Dealer Hard Love in watch circles really brings a new perspective to the... Ball gag.You wish... Dealer Hard Love only deals in beatings.
Agreed on all points.Same here, which makes life somewhat difficult for the wife when she buys gifts for me. Usually we exchange a gift list with each other and that way we at least get something we actually want. The wife bought me a hoodie, which I'd asked for, at Xmas but she unwisely ignored my daughters warnings that I'd not like it. I did not like it 😂😂😂. I do realise that this makes me a nightmare for gift buying......
Man, I had forgotten those mad numbers of when you joined here. You've certainly come a long way! 👍I saw some others admitting their cumulative failures year by year, so I thought I would join in the self-flagellation. These numbers are approximate, but I think they are pretty accurate.
2018: 75 watches purchased. 52 removed. SOTC - 23 watches. Joined WPAC mid year to reign in the madness.
2019: 33 watches purchased. 39 removed. SOTC - 17 watches. Still crazy churn, but certainly better than 2018.
2020: 20 watches purchased. 23 removed. SOTC - 14 watches. Getting better, but not reasonable yet.
2021: 13 watches purchased. 9 removed. SOTC - 18 watches. On the right path, but still too much flipping.
2022: 5 watches purchased. 5 removed. SOTC - 18 watches. Much improved, and finally disgusted with the churn.
Congratulations on the new purchase.Thought it might be fun to quote myself from almost exactly a year ago in the WPAC 2022 thread and take a look back.
If I were grading myself, I guess it would be a C+… definitely room for improvement. I did buy that Fenix 7 and used it for hikes, bike rides, the gym, etc. and it’s been great for that. Honestly, when camping/hiking I wear it on the right wrist with a mechanical still on the left, although I’ll wear the Garmin on the left wrist at the house sometimes if I need to get notifications for work but don’t want my phone on me.
Otherwise last year, I almost managed a self-imposed one-in, one-out policy. There was a good bit of churn in the collection and in the end I added a net of one watch (Seiko SSK001). That’s the relatively good part, the bad news is that I had four catch and releases that were basically impulse buys and ended up getting sold some weeks or months later (Casioak blue solar, green dial Seiko MM200, Sinn EZM2, Seiko SSK005), so that was really stupid on my part. Lesson learned to take much more time when I do decide to make a purchase. I was actually doing really good the first half of the year and all those happened the latter half. More good news… I managed to sell a number of watches and it felt really good and were all pretty smooth and easy sales. I actually have 18 now that I consider “core collection” which is down one and then of course the Seiko 5s, G-Shock, and Garmin that tend to get worn less or for really specific purposes.
I did add a heavy hitter, an Omega ‘57 Speedy. I purchased this a couple weeks ago but this is going to be my wedding watch - we picked a date in November 2023. I haven’t really worn it yet, but figured that I’d rather wear the hell out of it all of 2023 leading up to and including the wedding and make some memories with it this coming year rather than wait and just wear it on the wedding day.
Anyway… because of that, I really don’t want to add anything in 2023 and my new goal is to not even make an exception with a one-in, one-out rule. I plan to wear that speedy all year and besides they’ll be some expenses for the wedding that take priority.
That’s my plan, I’ll make a point to check in here more often when I need some support. Good luck all!
That's what put me off the studio underdogs in the end. Are they only really the same as an Ali Express watch for no more than half the price? The colours are imaginative, certainly.Check out the Studio Underd0g chronos with the Sea-gull st 1901 which I am told is a current build of an older Swiss Chrono...in any case there is a display back on these to see the movement. For the price it looks pretty good. You can purchase the movements in many other watches as well. Some as low as $200 usd.
I think that the churn, and associated with that the wasted opportunities, is the thing I regret the most. When I look back at the watches I've sold and regret it's hard. But there's no better lesson...........and finally disgusted with the churn.
I guess that makes sense, but you have to hand it to them. They put together pieces with very interesting and fun colors. This is what captured my interest anyway. Forget Ali Express for a moment...is the movement (with its history and reputation) any good? My sense is that it is. Your thoughts? That's what put me off the studio underdogs in the end. Hi Hornet, can I ask what you regret? Was it financial losses or that you didn't enjoy them fully / give them a chance to worm their way into your affections?I think that the churn, and associated with that the wasted opportunities, is the thing I regret the most. A very handsome trio! Unless I've missed it, I think Mido would be wise to release a non GMT Ocean Star with the same clean design.Ok as we finished 2021 to begin 2022, we are finishing 2022…no new watches, not even straps, but a lot of joy wearing them

Just stopping by to say good luck this year and post a pic to hopefully help yawl feel better about your watch buying habits/issues....I didn't actually count how many watches I added/gave away this year but I added a lot less than typical years for me. I think I am close to being cured. Have a great year everyone! Keep up the good work Horny!

Financial losses has always been a regret in this, but I can rationalise that as the price to play. I think the major regret is selling some watches that I should have probably held on to, ones that would have been perfect to live with for a long time, but the desire to be having the next shiny obsession realised clouded one's judgement.....Hi Hornet, can I ask what you regret? I never regretted selling a watch. The ones to sell literally jump out and sing to me. Jumping and singing is a complication I've not encountered yet. Sounds good though.I never regretted selling a watch. The ones to sell literally jump out and sing to me.
I may be changing. I used to not pay over £100 for a Chinese watch, which eliminated all mechanical chronographs despite the apparent similarity to the speedy pro for a fraction of the cost. So if I wouldn't pay £200 for a Ali Express, I decided £400 and now £500 for the same thing in a fancier package (ie studio underdog watermelon) wasn't great value.I guess that makes sense, but you have to hand it to them.
