Welcome to the 2023 Watch Purchasing Abstinence Club, otherwise known as WPAC. This is the 7th year of WPAC, which gives me pause to stop and think that I'm surprised it has lasted this long. We might just be onto a good thing?

I'm not intending to repeat the usual opening remarks, but if you're coming to this thread wondering what this is all about have a gander at the last couple of years WPAC threads:

.....obviously don't read them all, but the original, opening posts should give you a good idea. In short this is a thread for a like minded group of watch obsessed individuals who are generally trying to improve their watch buying habits. Anyone is welcome to join, but if you join we want participation and contribution!

In previous years we've had some rules, but this year there aren't going to be, there seems little point when we all have subtly (sometimes massively) different goals. If you are in serious horological trouble with buying then look back at the OP in previous WPAC threads, the rules should be a useful starting point if you want to get things under control or just shout out here to get some advice, it's what we're good at. Think of it like a clubhouse or a WUS subforum dedicated to being friendly, chatting about everything and anything and where you can find like minded watch fans.

Having said that, there is one rule I'd like everyone to adhere to; first post should be an intro with a SOTC picture (include everything, don't cheat) and some goals/aims for 2023. Whether you want to abstain completely, want to save for a special watch, just need to take control, slow things down or whatever, we'll be happy to have everyone. Just as long as you're clear on what your aims are.

Please participate in the thread, it's what makes it what it is. Any reasonable topic of conversation is acceptable and in fact welcomed.

Bashing of any potential purchases should still be a mandatory element, but let's keep it funny. Nuclear level bashing is required for any actual purchases.
Expect to be challenged by others if you're suggesting a purchase, whatever your personal goals/aims and expect to need to defend yourself.....

.....and with that I declare WPAC 2023 open for business. Yes, it's a little premature but I reckon I'll be quite busy after Xmas and between NY, so a little forward planning is required.

Same here, which makes life somewhat difficult for the wife when she buys gifts for me. Usually we exchange a gift list with each other and that way we at least get something we actually want. The wife bought me a hoodie, which I'd asked for, at Xmas but she unwisely ignored my daughters warnings that I'd not like it. I did not like it 😂😂😂. I do realise that this makes me a nightmare for gift buying......
Agreed on all points.
I may have discovered the best abstinence encouragement to date:
Returning a new purchase that was disappointing in real life via USPS international shipping.
An expensive lesson learned, and only hoping the return gets processed smoothly.

Hello WPAC 2023!

I am officially renewing my membership in this esteemed group. Last August, I posted about my exasperation with the churn in my collection over the past 4 years. I committed then to a plan to reduce my 18 piece collection significantly. I thought I would drop to about 3-4 pieces, with an eye to wearing one watch most of the time. I've done some reconsidering, and I'm going to stick with six watches for now.

I had 18 in my collection a year ago, and I only added one new watch since then (the Sub). I've already sold two watches this month, and I my WPAC 2023 goal is to keep selling most of the others, not buy anything new, and enjoy the watches I have.

Here are the six I plan to keep:
-Zelos Skyraider meteorite
-Omega Aqua Terra 41
-Sub 41
-Tudor Royal Day Date 41
-Oris Artelier 112 GMT 10-day
-Hamilton Khaki Pilot Day-Date

I saw some others admitting their cumulative failures year by year, so I thought I would join in the self-flagellation. These numbers are approximate, but I think they are pretty accurate.

2018: 75 watches purchased. 52 removed. SOTC - 23 watches. Joined WPAC mid year to reign in the madness.
2019: 33 watches purchased. 39 removed. SOTC - 17 watches. Still crazy churn, but certainly better than 2018.
2020: 20 watches purchased. 23 removed. SOTC - 14 watches. Getting better, but not reasonable yet.
2021: 13 watches purchased. 9 removed. SOTC - 18 watches. On the right path, but still too much flipping.
2022: 5 watches purchased. 5 removed. SOTC - 18 watches. Much improved, and finally disgusted with the churn.

Man, I had forgotten those mad numbers of when you joined here. You've certainly come a long way! 👍

Thought it might be fun to quote myself from almost exactly a year ago in the WPAC 2022 thread and take a look back.

If I were grading myself, I guess it would be a C+… definitely room for improvement. I did buy that Fenix 7 and used it for hikes, bike rides, the gym, etc. and it’s been great for that. Honestly, when camping/hiking I wear it on the right wrist with a mechanical still on the left, although I’ll wear the Garmin on the left wrist at the house sometimes if I need to get notifications for work but don’t want my phone on me.

Otherwise last year, I almost managed a self-imposed one-in, one-out policy. There was a good bit of churn in the collection and in the end I added a net of one watch (Seiko SSK001). That’s the relatively good part, the bad news is that I had four catch and releases that were basically impulse buys and ended up getting sold some weeks or months later (Casioak blue solar, green dial Seiko MM200, Sinn EZM2, Seiko SSK005), so that was really stupid on my part. Lesson learned to take much more time when I do decide to make a purchase. I was actually doing really good the first half of the year and all those happened the latter half. More good news… I managed to sell a number of watches and it felt really good and were all pretty smooth and easy sales. I actually have 18 now that I consider “core collection” which is down one and then of course the Seiko 5s, G-Shock, and Garmin that tend to get worn less or for really specific purposes.

I did add a heavy hitter, an Omega ‘57 Speedy. I purchased this a couple weeks ago but this is going to be my wedding watch - we picked a date in November 2023. I haven’t really worn it yet, but figured that I’d rather wear the hell out of it all of 2023 leading up to and including the wedding and make some memories with it this coming year rather than wait and just wear it on the wedding day.

Anyway… because of that, I really don’t want to add anything in 2023 and my new goal is to not even make an exception with a one-in, one-out rule. I plan to wear that speedy all year and besides they’ll be some expenses for the wedding that take priority.

That’s my plan, I’ll make a point to check in here more often when I need some support. Good luck all!
Congratulations on the new purchase.

It will be interesting to see if the pleasure of wearing such an expensive piece as the Speedy 57 out weighs the pleasure of the rest of your collection. I would be surprised if it does, to be honest. I would love to own the same watch (the red version for me) but it certainly wouldn't stop me wearing my other watches.

I am however unexpectedly currently wearing my latest acquisition, an inexpensive Sugess Moonphase, to the exclusion of all other watches. I left it off for 2 days, wearing a different watch, but I just don't want to let it stop ticking, so I am back to wearing it. I want to follow its first whole first moon cycle, so since the last new moon was Dec 23rd, this is my one watch until Jan 22nd, but it's no hardship. :D

Check out the Studio Underd0g chronos with the Sea-gull st 1901 which I am told is a current build of an older Swiss Chrono...in any case there is a display back on these to see the movement. For the price it looks pretty good. You can purchase the movements in many other watches as well. Some as low as $200 usd.
That's what put me off the studio underdogs in the end. Are they only really the same as an Ali Express watch for no more than half the price? The colours are imaginative, certainly.
......and finally disgusted with the churn.
I think that the churn, and associated with that the wasted opportunities, is the thing I regret the most. When I look back at the watches I've sold and regret it's hard. But there's no better lesson.....

I guess that makes sense, but you have to hand it to them. They put together pieces with very interesting and fun colors. This is what captured my interest anyway. Forget Ali Express for a moment...is the movement (with its history and reputation) any good? My sense is that it is. Your thoughts?
Just stopping by to say good luck this year and post a pic to hopefully help yawl feel better about your watch buying habits/issues....I didn't actually count how many watches I added/gave away this year but I added a lot less than typical years for me. I think I am close to being cured. Have a great year everyone! Keep up the good work Horny!

Hi Hornet, can I ask what you regret? Was it financial losses or that you didn't enjoy them fully / give them a chance to worm their way into your affections?

A very handsome trio! Unless I've missed it, I think Mido would be wise to release a non GMT Ocean Star with the same clean design.

Financial losses has always been a regret in this, but I can rationalise that as the price to play. I think the major regret is selling some watches that I should have probably held on to, ones that would have been perfect to live with for a long time, but the desire to be having the next shiny obsession realised clouded one's judgement.....

I never regretted selling a watch. The ones to sell literally jump out and sing to me. "I'm so pissed you don't even belong on my wrist!"

Jumping and singing is a complication I've not encountered yet. Sounds good though.

I may be changing. I used to not pay over £100 for a Chinese watch, which eliminated all mechanical chronographs despite the apparent similarity to the speedy pro for a fraction of the cost. So if I wouldn't pay £200 for a Ali Express, I decided £400 and now £500 for the same thing in a fancier package (ie studio underdog watermelon) wasn't great value.

I just broke my £100 rule and bought a Sugess Moonphase for about £135, (see near the end of WPAC 2022), and was much hammered for buying the temporary discount, but it's terrific. The moon is waxing strongly now, as you can see. If I ever contemplated a ST chronograph, I could see me adding one of a few Sugess models at around £200, but I really do not expect to buy a watch next year

I did spend £3 on this 21mm mesh bracelet for the Sugess though which arrived today.
