It finally happened. Someone at work commented on my watch and said that it was a beautiful watch. She seemed sincere too!
Never in my eight years of WISdom has anyone ever said that about a watch I was wearing.
Not my stark, minimalist (former) Sinn/Damasko watches, Tudor Pelagos, my many (former) Seikos, or my trusty GW-5000. I think I blushed a little.
She said that it reminded her of the Casios from the old days and that it looked like it could double as a casual or a dress piece for formal attire. I'm inclined to agree.

Lately, I've been admiring the silver B5000. Its polished surfaces reflect light quite a bit, making it an eye-catching G-Shock. Some here find that level of shininess a major turn-off, but I've come to enjoy it.
I normally stay away from blingy pieces, but the B5000 is the good kind of wrist-eye-candy.
On a sunny day, the connective parts of the links tend to reflect light while the brushed areas downplay the light slightly, creating an interesting visual.
It reminds me of my old Seiko MM300, which had brushed and polished surfaces on the sides of the case. It was also quite the visual treat.
David Bredan, in his ABlogtoWatch B5000 first impressions piece, wrote that the "play between the brushed and polished elements is quirky." I agree.
It's quirky, but quirkiness is characteristic of G-Shock's design language. I think it's done well, but then again, I have little experience with high level watch finishing.

I've owned the silver B5000 since late April, yet only just recently have I started to bond with it.
I honestly did not wear it much since it is a pretty piece, which I felt made it feel more jewel than tool.

Today's incident is doubly odd for me since I'm not used to people commenting on my watches (my other co-worker said my GPR Rangeman was ridiculously huge lol).
To hear a G-Shock being called "beautiful" -- it's just strange. I'm so used to G-Shocks being regarded as fun, but "ugly" watches, especially in our community of watch nerds.

I just had some thoughts that I'd like to share. Carry on. :-d

Yes, I’m inclined to agree. Well, I’ve never had anyone comment that any of my Gs are “beautiful.” (Even though they are!) Plenty of people comment that my dog is beautiful when I’m out walking her. To which I reply, “You know, they say that dogs take after their owners in that respect!” :-d:-d:-d Kidding.

Yes, the GMW-B5000D is impressive, IMO. Especially the combo of polished and brushed bezel...really striking! Plus the fantastic STN display...BT connectivity....what more could you want????! :-!

Yes! I think most squares are beautiful. The big Rangeman too haha :-d

What kind of dog? I love dogs, but I can't own any where I live.

Indeed! Casio hit gold -- and silver and DLC! -- with their GMW squares. Aesthetically pleasing, a vivid, legible display, and a functional module. Even non-watch fans seem to find it a stunner.

Thanks. I would say that she's an attractive person. I have a girlfriend, so I won't be making any moves haha

Oh my goodness! You have an incredibly beautiful dog! I can see why random folks stop you while walking Kisha.

Congratulations, Otto ;-) Only comments that I get, if I ever get any, are like "Again a new watch?" :)

I too had compliments on my GMW, but it was the DLC. I remember when my missus and I walked into a G-Shock specialist watch store in Hong Kong, the owners started mumbling about our DLCs haha. Then back in Australia, I walked into a regular watch store, the sales knew exactly what I was wearing and asked if he could have a look at it.

I think the GMW-B5000 are just something else, a different kind of beast/beauty.

Otto,
I completely agree with your admiration and new feelings towards the B5000 (i have them too).

It has been the ONLY watch I managed to wear for nearly 2 weeks in a row, till last Monday (now wearing the GW-5000). I only took it during some pool activities and a mountain bike ride where the RangeBeast is the perfect fit.

I've been neglecting SS and/or watches with metal straps all my life but the B5000 is just something different.
Difficult to explain in words what makes it to stand out from the rest.
It's just a gorgeous watch and extremely pleasant to wear.

It does look good. I guess you have to look after it to keep the spark.

I received some compliments of the Seiko Astron from men, but non for my Gs. However yesterday a woman complimented my PRW-6600. Casio did a great job with it.

Great write up and photos, @Ottovonn. Paints a nice picture about its appeal. I think I’d have to see one in person to appreciate it. The size and weight seem very appealing. Thanks for sharing, very glad you got a chance to snag and enjoy one!

Hahaha That and the usual "they all look the same" are the rare comments I get on my watches. My friend once saw my collection of squares and said "Why are you collecting the same watch?" Each square is quite different!!!

He's somewhat of a WIS, but collects giant Nixon watches.

That's awesome, Charles. I haven't gotten any compliments on my DLC. I guess it really is the more under-the-radar GMW, which is exactly what I love about it.

Wow! That's awesome to hear. I like wearing SS bracelet watches, but prefer titanium for their lightweight feel on the wrist. The GMW is a heavier piece than I prefer, but it feels balanced and comfortable on the wrist. Perhaps it has to do with the square form factor. I like how it looks too on my 6.5" wrists. I wholeheartedly agree that it's got that magic.

I generally treat my watches with great care, especially if they have polished surfaces. I'm much more careless with my GW-5000 and other resin clad watches. I wonder if I'll feel the same as my B5000 collects more scratches. I've bumped the bezel against a few door handles -- and cringe a little each time. I can see how people notice the PRW's. They are bold, visible and handsome pieces.

I appreciate that, Sir-Guy! Definitely try to see one up close. In terms of weight and size, it's an ideal daily wear piece. You're welcome!

Here's a new article out just today about the GMW-B5000. Seems to go perfectly with Otto's thread. ;-)

Not sure where they got the retail of the GMW-B5000D of $800 though.... I believe it's $500.

Thanks for sharing the link, Time4Play. I love reading any literature I can find on G-Shocks, especially of ones I own. This was a pretty good read. I agree wholeheartedly that Casio nailed it in the execution of this watch, from the finishing to functionality, especially at its price point. It really is a "sexy and sleek" G-Shock. :D

not a cheap, plastic toy watch.

one might go as far as saying "soulful".
Maybe this watch can finally convince G-Shock haters that G-Shocks have plenty of soul haha

Well I hated to do it, but sold my gold GMW. ;-)

If I were the type of collector who would keep a watch in the collection to admire and just look at, then I never would have let it go. But it wasn’t getting any wear and I knew it wouldn’t, cause I’d always choose my DLC or silver square over it. Never wear = gotta go. So sadly, it’s gone.

But, I still have the silver and DLC squares to keep me happy. :):-!:-!
