The Unofficial Kurono/Chrono Tokyo thread

Hi All,

the toki thread was becoming more of a general kurono thread so I figured we should have a separate one for general discussion.

pictured is my Toki. Wish I had a panda dial chronograph 1 but I can be patient for a future chronograph release. Would've grabbed the chronograph 2 but I didn't like the inner track.

So if the Toki thread has become sort of like a Master Thread for the brand...why don't we try and get it renamed as such? Not sure starting yet another thread is going to do any good and IMHO it will just become more confusing on where to comment.....especially since various topics have already been discussed in the Toki thread.

+1 on that. And there has been a previous attempt at a Kurono thread

My Bullseye review blew up into a 10 page Kurono thread too, so I welcome this new thread ?

honestly either way is fine. I would say the intention of the other separate threads was just to discuss the new releases because there wasn't previously one centralized thread, compared to the Ming thread where new releases can be discussed in one thread. I think at this point the user base of WUS can support one dedicated thread for the brand.

My Chronograph 2 is happy we have a new thread :)

The watch is a PITA to read the chronograph but boy is she pretty and I love it.

I wonder what are the odds kurono ever comes out with a dive watch. doesn't really match their aesthetic but you never know.

Topper sold a Chronograph 2 for about $6000 today. That seems pretty good. There were a couple listed on eBay this week with an opening bid around there that didn't sell (although with eBay you have to pay taxes, and Rob doesn't charge tax to out-of-staters).

Do you all think the resale for the 1 and 2 are about the same? I can't tell which is more popular. I think there are fewer 1s total across colors and brands (Chrono/Kurono) than 2s, plus the 1s are the classic panda/reverse panda. But the 2 is more distinctive...?
After dealing with a serious roof leak tn...this was nice to see pop into my inbox!

So to take our minds off the watches we are all waiting on....let's speculate on what else we will see from Kurono this year. Based on the past releases, we should see a new watch at the end of the year if they stick to previous release timing schedules. Honestly I think this will be tough for them since they will still be trying to get the Tokis out but we shall see.

What does everyone think we will see released?
1. Another dial variant in the 37mm stainless steel case we have been getting since the beginning? Depending on how you count we have seen 8 variants sold under the Chrono Tokyo brand and 8 under the Kurono Tokyo brand.
2. Another Chrono variant? We have seen 3 variants so far.
3. Something new?

If something new....then what? Some thoughts:
1. A 37mm case in a different material?
2. A 37mm case with a small second hand?
3. A larger case?
4. Something completely new?

The easy way out would be another dial variant in the 37mm stainless case. People had said an ice blue would be nice when there were discussions on what the anniversary watch would be.....we got the Toki. Is just another dial variant enough to keep the momentum of the brand going?

Really tough to predict. I would put my money on something new since I think they have exhausted the current formats they have already and they need to keep the collectors hungry for more. The one exception would be is if they have another dial production method to roll out like the Grand Akane where they are using some artisanal technique to make the dial, which would be enough of a variation.

Maybe since now they are realizing that there's not that much of a domestic market for them they might go for the slightly larger case. I bet they get a lot of feedback on their brand that folks like the watches but aren't buying because they think they are too small. So I would guess something in the 39 range.

What I'd like to see is a completely new watch - a different case from the two they've been aggressively reusing. If they reuse this case anymore, I think they risk destroying any value they've created with their designs, similar to what Seiko does with any of their popular watches.

If it is a three hander, I'd like to see a different movement. Miyota has upgraded their 8 and 9 series movements earlier this year, so I hope they get with the program and move to the new movements. They appear to be better across the board.

A manual wind movement would work perfectly with their aesthetic and I would love to see that, but I'm not sure if the rest of the customer base thinks the same.

So I agree with @conrad227 and a larger case would be a smart move too.

It would certainly sell. Thing is, there aren't any Japanese hand wound movements available. Only watches I can remember are the 9S64 powered GSs, or the 9R31 spring drive... And can't see Kurono using either of those.

Yeah, I looked through Miyota's catalog and couldn't find one. And Seiko is unlikely to share their 9S/9R. So the best I can hope for is the upgraded Miyota or something more bespoke - perhaps a simple movement designed by Hajime and outsourced to a third party manufacturer.

This thing can absolutely look great as a unisex option too.
