I was chatting with a friend, and of course we discussed time pieces, the obvious subject of Rolex vs. Omega came up (we happen to love both, and have pieces from both brands), but somehow he asked me about the Pelagos.
I know the history of Tudor, but it is not a brand that I have bought before (the Harrods looks very cool, would I buy it? No.) so I said ‘hmm not sure never had it on wrist…’
To which his response was ‘I don’t blame you, Tudor is just a diet Rolex.’
I do see the similarity in case and dial designs…and of course the history behind Tudor, but where do you stand on Tudor, is it a diet Rolex? Or is it its own brand with its own style, and history?

It is hard to not view them as a sub brand if Rolex though. I don’t think of Tudor as a separate entity.

Tudor seems more of a Rolex "Lite". Not bad watches, though.

The BB58 seems to be a very desired model, it looks nice.

Rolex is Rolex.

I can see that. It’s like Swatch Group owing so many amazing brands (including Omega), yet those brands have their own identity. However those brands were acquired by Swatch, in the case of Tudor, it was specifically started as being the more accessible Rolex.

I can appreciate that. But it looks like some guys are taking offense. Recently someone here callled me an Omega fanboy, wasn’t sure what that was, I really do like Omega I own a few, I also really like Rolex, again I own a few…but I’ve owned Seiko and Tissot and so many others that I’ve loved…because a beautiful piece is just that, regardless of the brand…but I’ve never been offended by someone not like one of my time pieces. I simply don’t care.

They probably used to be for a long time.. More recently though I see them as a capable prestige brand in their own right.. As much so as anything else in their category.

I respect that. What models jump out to you as being unique to them that sets them as being their own brand (I’ve re-read the question, it may sound like I’m asking sarcastically but I’m not, I want to see a picture of a model that says…this is where Tudor began its journey to being its own brand, like every brand has their ‘signature’ piece…Accutron, Moonwatch etc).

Maybe once upon a time Tudor was Rolex-lite, but I don't think you can say that anymore.
The modern Tudor, built around the success of the Black Bay, has built a brand identity over the past 10 years that many watch companies would be jealous of.

I really do like the black bay, and again really do like the Harrods

I have nothing against Tudor and for those who have watches from the brand, that's great.

Having said that, I truly believe if they weren't related to Rolex, people would think of Oris, Longines, Norqain and maybe some Breitling as the tier Tudor is in. They are an approved homage brand to their big brother. Nothing at all wrong with that, not at all, but people think they go against Omega and some even go so far as to think they are even better than Omega. That has to be, in large part, due to it's relationship with Rolex.

It is Diet Rolex for three reasons: 1) It has only reached such high favor in 10 years because watch buyers want SOMETHING on their wrists that is associated with the all mighty Rolex; 2) Tudor will NEVER be allowed to have better specs or finishing than its bigger brother; 3) You may like the Tudors, but deep down, you really wanted the Rolex.

What does Tudor do that Rolex doesn't, or can’t? is there a pic of a model you can share or comparison? Would be helpful as I’m trying to understand this divide between aficionados of both brands

I think that some Tudor owners have been drawn to Tudor due to it's association with Rolex. To me I think of Tudor as Rolex's brother , I think that because they are owned by the same company, the parent demands the name be upheld. Tudor is high quality, but many people do not place it on par with Rolex. I am totally ok with that, Is a Pelagos at 50% the cost of a Submariner at retail, and maybe 40% of the Submariner at Grey prices a good choice? I say Yes.
