It’s not harsh, I think he’s just a little angry because sometimes people get upset over perceived criticism of something they love. it shouldn’t have been perceived as criticism, but oh well!

Tudor is just Diet Rolex
I was chatting with a friend, and of course we discussed time pieces, the obvious subject of Rolex vs. Omega came up (we happen to love both, and have pieces from both brands), but somehow he asked me about the Pelagos.
I know the history of Tudor, but it is not a brand that I have bought before (the Harrods looks very cool, would I buy it? No.) so I said ‘hmm not sure never had it on wrist…’
To which his response was ‘I don’t blame you, Tudor is just a diet Rolex.’
I do see the similarity in case and dial designs…and of course the history behind Tudor, but where do you stand on Tudor, is it a diet Rolex? Or is it its own brand with its own style, and history?

What makes you think people dont see them in the same tier as those brands? They are, by pricing fact and their own company branding, Rolex’s lower tier brand. They are on the higher side of that tier like Breitling, but they still arent at the same level as Rolex and Omega, and I dont think a lot of people think they are…unless I am mistaken.I have nothing against Tudor and for those who have watches from the brand, that's great.
Having said that, I truly believe if they weren't related to Rolex, people would think of Oris, Longines, Norqain and maybe some Breitling as the tier Tudor is in. They are an approved homage brand to their big brother. Nothing at all wrong with that, not at all, but people think they go against Omega and some even go so far as to think they are even better than Omega. That has to be, in large part, due to it's relationship with Rolex.

These threads pop up about once a month which is probably to be expected; there's a limited number of things you can discuss about watches on a forum with thousands of members. Everything will get discussed sooner or later and usually more than once. But frequently, they occur only to rake the coals of hackneyed debate which is, ultimately, trolling. It's not legitimate discussion. Throwing out a controversial issue that's been hashed and rehashed dozens of times can be simply naively unaware of the forum's history, or it's just plain childish. Calling Tudor 'diet' is just looking to upset folks and when you're looking to get a big thread-count and try to upset folks who spent, usually, thousands of dollars on something, you're gonna get some negative responses.
I suspect you understood that from the beginning. But if you didn't, all the 'watch the world burn' and popcorn GIFS probably clued you in.
I own a Tudor and Rolex. I don't think there's any substantial qualitative difference between the two. I definitely don't think the MSRP or inflated street prices are worth it currently. It really just comes down to preference and if you think there's more to a watch than than build quality and detailing. When I bought my ExpII in 2016, it was both the most comfortable watch I ever had on my wrist and I couldn't find a decent alternative. However, if the BB Pro was available back then, it's very possible I would have gotten that instead.

I appreciate your perspective. To be fair, I only started posting recently, usually in what are you wearing but every once in a while something I find to be interesting, like the discussion I had with my friend. Love Squirt! Great mixer. It is also really good with gin. Discovered that in Jamaica. The bartender at our resort’s pool took a test tube, filled it half with gin, half with cold Squirt. Wrapped it in a towel and slammed it down on the bar to mix. Then we had to consume it in one gulp. That was a fun vacation 😎I'm sorry, but that stuff really is called squirt, and I really do like squirt. Mix it with tequila and a lime wedge, top it off with ice and boom, great drink over a carne asada.
