VH31 - Seiko/TMI Adds 3-Hand, No Date Caliber to VH Smooth Sweeping Series

I just noticed this new Seiko/TMI Caliber, VH31.

A company on Alibaba is offering this movement as an option in a mid-range dive watch.

It's a 4 ticks per second (2 Hz), high torque, smooth sweeping, quartz movement. Seiko claims it will last 2 years on an SR920SW battery. I wish Seiko or Citizen would combine smooth sweeping quartz technology with solar/Eco-Drive, but I think that might be packing too much in a small space.

I hadn't really noticed this before, but Seiko's smooth sweeping movements seem to be incompatible with any date wheel, and only offer day and date sub-dials.

Re: VH31 - Seiko/TMI Adds 3-Hand, No Date Caliber to Meca-Quartz Series

Hmm? There's a bunch of their mecaquartz chrono variants with date wheels...

Also, I'm slightly confused about what makes this movement a "meca-quartz". With the chronos, it's clear - the pushers and hand reset functions are mechanic, and the movement/powering/stepping is quartz. Here, the movement only has the power and stepping, which... are both quartz. So what's the "mecha" part? Isn't this just a high-frequency quartz?

It probably just uses the VH base.

When they have a date version, especially a date-at-6 wheel version, color me very interested. I know the older chrono movement supports having a date.
My bad. I confused them with the VK Meca-Quartz. I hadn't seen a smooth sweeping Seiko other than the VK series in a watch. These are just Seiko's answer to Bulova's Accutron and Precisionist movements.

This higher beat quartz movement came out last year IIRC. It also has a multifunction/dial setup, as seen on the Aragon Predator quartz and a few Kenneth Cole watches.

The faster sweeping quartz is not as smoith as a regular 6bps auto, but it is quite nice.
