probably the cheapest watch on the planet made by a single manufacturer - Vostok Komandirskie. Usually painted with various military themes, sold for $35 on eBay, the lowest common denominator, I could say, for manufacturer mechanical watches. I approached it with a trembling heart, expecting disasters...

here are details. Summary - what a fool I was! This watch is one joyful ride into the world of solid mechanical work with oldtimey feeling, great work on screws, interesting view of the escapement pallet held in place by epoxy (?), clean movement, specks on dial, the dial painting is what we expect - not perfect, but this is no Van Cleef & Arpels, hands pretty good for the money, movement simply lovely human work.Overall I love the unexpected quality in the cheapest watch on the planet :)

Excellent series. I think it is shellac, used to attach and adjust the pallets.

Do you have a HMT you can do this to? I guess it might be quite rough under the microscope.
+1 on that. I'd be interested to see an HMT pilot a little closer. The dial would probably be a train wreck but the movement might not be so bad.
